Question Sore muscles...how long to recover?

Hi ya'll
I have been slimming down with the use of some weights, but am now becoming really modivated to see my body become more. Hubby and I decided to create a workout plan (we are sooo just learning) so we decided to really push our muscles. First day we found our max in weights, then went down a little to perform reps. First day was total upper body almost an hour. Second day, total lower body. By the third day.....OUCH! Needed rest. Which was ok. My ? is ....I have read two different things on recovery. One, was to only recover one day in between muscle groups, the other was that one should let the muscles no longer feel sore. Hmmmm? Now which is it? Any advice for someone new at this? I would be ever so greatful.

P.S. ?
Any advice that has worked for you in shedding fat.

Have a great day Looking forward to getting to know you all.

If you're just beginning to use weights, I would not train sore muscles. Wait until your DOMS is gone (or almost).

Definately wait til your not sore. Maybe you can try a split. How many days do you work out? My split is this:

chest/tris
legs
back/bis
shoulders

This way your giving your worked muscles a rest while working on other parts.

This was my first week, so I have lots of tweeking and learning to see what fits .... I have only been lifting about 2x a week before this. Mon. was total upper body..chest, shoulders, trecp, bicps, and abs. Soreness is beginning to wear down. Tues. was total lower body. I was planning on a schedule like this..
Day one ...upper body. Day two lower body. Day three extra cardio (that didn't happen because of my soreness). And day four was to be a rest day. Then to start the pattern over.
To be totally honest, I am not sure how to come up with the best plan. I want to build muscle, but stay feminine. Shedding fat is a must. I am currently a size 6/7 in jeans...but under those jeans I can see the fat.
