Boxing
Do you think that the jab is the most important punch in order to dominate an amateur fight. Please inform me of your opinions.

The jab is a important punch for the simple fact in boxing it's how you control your distance. I'm an amatuer kickboxer, I'm 6'5" 220 lbs I use my jab to keep my distance and to know what techniques I can and can't use.

are you carrying any excess fat would be the first thing i would need to know as it is vital to have a low bf% in boxing. It is also important to reliase that strength isnt the most important attribute in boxing. I belevie skill and cardio vacular fitness are. Its also important to learn how to skip. Get back to me with your body fat% and your weight in kilos please im english and dont understand pounds. Im a middleweight and my record is 21bouts 20W 1L 12KOS. I lost my first fight on pts.

my BF % is under 10%...any more accurate than that i dont know. Probably close to 6%.
i weigh 130, and know that boxing is one of the toughest sports to train for, which means that it also weaks the greatest rewards in conditioning...right?
thanks
ps-thats an impressive reocrd

Boxing Routine (USA Park District)
At the gym I attend its like this
Get there at 6pm (opening)
Right away grab a rope and start jumping rope for 3 and a half minutes, and 30 seconds go all out, or relax (you choose). Then rest for one minute. Do this for six rounds.
At the gym they have this cool timer, its like a traffic light. It has Green, Yellow and red.
when its green you go, when its yellow its letting you know your round is about to finish (30 seconds left), red means you stop.
Ok so thats the first thing. Six rounds of rope jumping for 4 minutes each.
Then you shadow box the same amount of rounds and time. You do have to know how to properly throw punches and move head. I can use some tips on shadow boxing too...
When I shadow box I try to imagine im fighting an opponent but then my imagination stops working and im just throwing punches like a jackass...so try to train SMART.
Ok after that, you hit the punching bag for three rounds...Then go do sit ups for two rounds, then push ups for two rounds...after that you chill...but wait its not over YET
You stand up straight, spine aligned...extend your arms to your sides to make a 'T' then you rotate your arms forwards and backwards for two rounds...this burns like CRAZY after all youve done..
Just rotate your arms clockwise three times, and counterclockwise three time...you know switch it up. Make sure arms are elevated the whole round, youre supposed to feel a crazy burn.

i would reccomend running 3-5 kms a round 3 times a week. Runs this in as quick a time as possible. I swap between road and hill runs also i do 1min jog 30 mins fast. Then skip about 3 times a week for 3minute rounds as fast as possible. Thats what i reccomend for starting. any more questions ill be pleased to answer. its best to learn punching one to one with a coach.

Hye build me up . Thanks alot
i do have a question. How would you go about a heavy bag routine?
IF your wrist hurts should you still train on the heavy bag...i just strated and my wrist has started to hurt and i was wondering if i shuld take it slower
Thanks

iron lion zion
on a heavy bag u shud lower your punch power otherwise you'll damage yourself, also to add to the guys routine ^ dont do 3 rounds on bags do 6. if you were a pro u would do more. plus incorporate runs aswell (this includes sprint work)

A good way to check your progress is to spar for 4 rounds. If your almost dead then you know you have to train more.

working the bag
When youre working the punching bag always wear wrist wraps and Bag gloves...This is lessen the damage to your knuckles and wrist.

but if your wrists do hurt when you punch should you continue?
thanks

No dont keep punching it if your wrists hurt...Just shadow box at high intensity with a proper form. Thats a good ass work out. Six rounds and youll be sweating your ass off, sometimes it even feels like my stomach gets a workout from shadow boxing (probably from crosses and hooks). It increases speed, and in my opinion power too, because you get to utilize your energy better by trial and error
Do you have weak wrists, Stalker 23?

stalker robtheboxer has banged the nail on the head. If your wrists hurt and wearing wraps stop. Also make sure you have tied yout wraps properly this is a common mistake. For heavy bag work i would recommend 30 secs high intensity work followed by a recovery period. These are called bag sprints. Alternate between sprints and normal 3minutes rounds for tour bag workouts.

Can't wait to try them. That would certainly lift the intensity in a session. I guess you wouldnt do them each time you train, would you? just on days when you are concentrating on lift your threshold?

it would depend on your fitness. Try and build up to doing sprints three times a week. You will be glad as the first round of fights is often an out and out sprint as some guys go steaming out to strat with.

at your gym they should be doing training for fighters only, go to your coach or owner and tell him you want to fight, he should be able to start you out(you trainign is lacking, you need to skip more, run more, bags more, do everything more(1-4 hours at the gym).)
this is mine.
warm up, 2 rounds, shadow boxing foot work.
run - 2-3 miles,
skip - 8-10 rounds,(don'y stop, every 4 rounds do a 30 secound skip sprint.)
bags - 6 rounds (add'ed 2 rons of up and downs/ 1 round of jabs.)
shadow boxing, foot work etc.. (here i will do 4-5 rounds of ether depending on wat i need to work on i some times add weights,. i also ask coach on advice here
sit ups. (upper or lower)
- of course sparing is dun in between this and this rotain isn't set in stone.

i really thought tszyu would win but i really wanted ricky to win. I beleive tszyu is the more talented boxer and a rematchs outcome would depend upon the referees opinion on clinching. However Hatton fought the figh he had to in order to win it wasnt pretty but very effective. Yes Hattons blow was very low and deliberate but as he said boxing isnt a tickling sport. Have you seen any of Hattons interviews he is a top bloke also full marks to Tszyu a true champion. Im not sure if he will come back though.

ok wel the pain should go wen your wrists get use to the bag work. My knuckles still hurt sumtimes after a hard bag session and sumtimes they bleed if my wraps arent dun tight enough because of the rubbbing.

WEDNESDAY-Leg Power and Abs then Boxing
THURSDAY-Skipping then Boxing

We do cardio at boxing on mondays plus skipping is a good cardio workout. We did weighted hill runs tonight for fitness.

Back on topic: "Do you think that the jab is the most important punch in order to dominate an amateur fight. Please inform me of your opinions."
Yes. Just ask Tito. Winky only needed his jab to win that fight. Even more important for amateur fights, imho, since you score on points, not on how bad you hurt your opponent with a power shot.
So 2 jabs are better than landing an uppercut (in am. boxing).
If you happen to be 19 years old, and named Mike Tyson, I'm sure you can get by without a jab. There are exceptions to the rule.

sorry i couldn't repost .. i'm capped at the moment kind of hard to connect.
yeah hatton put a good fight, i enjoyed the match kept me on the balls of my feet the whole 11 rounds . hmm na i haven't really been watching hattons interviews i stay away from the english fighters, i normall like middle wiegh and higher.
i think i might put some money on hatton next game lol
.. if you get pain in your wrist, it could mean 2 things 1 your not punchign right, you punch with your first 2 knuckles, 2 you'r wrists are week, make sure that your rapping is tight, hand open when rapping ..
yes the jab is the most important punch in the game, i use the jab to estimate the oppenant defens during late rounds, also to mesuare distance or to line up a clean right, it's also good to use as a defensive, stoppping a enemy from coming into close, or to confuse them and land clean punchs behind the jab,(jab, step forward, hook etc...) the only real time jab doesn't work is when your fighting poepel liek hatton or tyson or rocky ramanes etc.......(i don't care if my spelling sucks,)

Im a kickboxer too, i agree a jab is a really good way to keep distance and know what techniques to use in a fight, my coah is always telling me to jab away after hitting, and stuff like that. Im a very dominant kicker, i love to throw those kicks out there..mm fighting, gotta love it!
