Upset tummy?
Hey all,
I am a newbie here!
Question for you guys...
I got up this morning and had 1/2 scoop of whey protein in water about 20 mins before my workout. I then did my weight routine which lasted about 45 minutes and stretched. I showered, and after that had breakfast which included 3 egg whites with some salsa and 1/2 c oats w/ frozen blueberries. About 15 mins later, boy was my tummy upset!
Any ideas? I have been eating clean now for about a week and a half and can already tell a difference in my body but this upset tummy this morning took me off guard. Could it have been the protein prior to working out?
Any ideas would be much appreciated:-)
Thanks!!
Mandy

Have you considered reversing your meals? I find that eating real food before weight training gives me more energy and stamina. A protein shake before lifting just doesn't cut it for me...if I don't get enough food in me before a good weight workout, I feel lethargic, dizzy and unmotivated.
I would try to eat your eggs and oats before your workout, and have your protein shake with maybe 1/2 banana after your workout.
Good luck!

x 2! If I drink a shake before my workout, it makes me nauseas (or however the heck you spell that darn word). I think everybody is different, but next time try eating real food beforehand, and see if it makes a difference.

Depending on what kind of protein powder you've got, you took in about 50 calories before your workout - that's not very much fuel (especially after not eating for, say, 8 hours while you were sleeping).
You can try having the eggs and oats before your workout, but I personally really like a liquid meal before I work out. I lift weights in the morning too, and I tend to get nauseous if I eat 'real' food before. I try to take in 250-300 calories though - I usually have a scoop of whey in milk with flax seeds, sometimes with a banana.

Maybe this is a bit farfetched, but depending what was in your salsa, maybe the acidic/alkaline mix of foods was upsetting to your stomach. I'll never forget, a few years ago I ate a salad one night for dinner with a vinaigrette dressing and had a piece of cake afterward, and I was sick all evening with a roily-boily stomach. No fun! But, too, it could just have been you put a lot of food suddenly on a worked-out system that hadn't much fuel prior to exertion; or it could have been a fluke. If it happens again, try to find similarities between the instances and you might have a solid answer.

Thanks for your advice everyone. My stomach was a bit upset all day. I am not sure exactly what it was . Perhaps my body is adjustnig to clean eating...now that I've done it consistenly for about 2 weeks now. The only problem I have with eating my real breakfast beforehand is that I workout first thing in the morning before work--meaning I get up at 5am and am working out by 5:30. Not much time to give a whole lot of food time to digest.... and I know its not really good to workout on a completely empty stomach (except just cardio..but even that I have trouble with sometimes).
I took Beano this AM before breakfast to help. I think all the extra protein and veggies I've been eating may just been an adjustment for my system--which was used to more sugar and carbs.

Another thing, if you are not used to working out you may have to give your digestive system time to adjust no matter what you eat. I've always been this way. Exercise will stimulate the digestive tract (ever hear of the runner's runs?). When I start something new I can get indigestion during or up to 6 hours later. Sometimes it's just a queasy feeling. When it happens to me I know I'm pushing it and that I just need to take it slow, let my gut catch up. Usually within about 2 weeks it adjusts. Until I significantly up the exercise. I take Axid to help with the extra acid.

Some people also have a period of time to adjust to protein shakes. Is this a new thing for you or perhaps a new brand?

I have had shakes before, but I have increased the amt lately. Also, it is a new brand. Its the GNC Whey. Interesting though, this morning I mixed 2 scoops of it with 1/2oats and 4 egg whites and made a "protein pancake". It was good, and I didn't have any problems. Differences: I didn't workout this morning, its my rest day; AND I took Beano before. Hmmm... may just have to keep experimenting?

I think you'll have to work on one thing at a time to be able to determine the cause, but I can tell you from my own experience that I oftentimes feel a little nauseous (and sometimes get headaches) after a protein shake, but anytime I use the protein powder in cooking (mixed in oats, pancake, etc.) I don't feel it so much. I've also switched to using powders with no artificial sugars/alcohols. I think this was causing me some digestive issues so now I use ON made with stevia and Arbonne which also uses stevia as a sweetner.
Good luck figuring it out. Not feeling good can hamper your workouts so I hope this doesn't come to this.
Also, noticed you're a fellow Hoosier.....

Eggs
Eggs that are not boiled have always upset my stomach. Protein powder causes bloat for alot of people as well. That takes time to adjust to. If time does not solve the protein problem, try casien protein or soy protein sources. It may be a lactose sensitivity.

I have problems too...
Same upset tummy. I think it's from the whey as well. Tummyache all day in fact. I am curently taking Designer whey, (i'm new and didn't know any better), but from previous suggestion I will try the ON WHey and see if that makes a differenece. I heat it's the best. Do you all buy from this site or other sites? What's the scoop on bb coupons, and how can I get them?
mandyleeann, thanks for bringing it up, I would have not thought it was the whey. I thought it was all the fiber and protein of clean eating too.

What whey are you taking now?Just curious if its one that had problems with.
I buy most of my supplements from b.b.com. You can find ON whey at gnc and most supplement stores. The price on this site is a little better but sometimes after S&H its about the same.I feel safe ordering from this sit and always get my order in two to three days.Im not sure about the coupons, maybe someone will have some info on that.I would like to know if im missing out.
