mercury in tuna
My sister cautioned me today that I shouldn't eat more than 3 servings of tuna a week due to its mercury content. Is this a real concern?

if u search for tuna on the threads ull find 10-20 threads just like this one..
or read the nutrition articles under the nutrition section in BB.com not on the forms.. all the replies are there..
but 3 cans a week is perfectly fine.. especially if chunk light..

Technically, you should only have around one can, depending on your body size. Tuna is very high in mercury. Here is a good website regarding how much fish you probably can consume without developing mercury toxicity:

Vastly overstated. You'd have to eat an ungodly amount of canned tuna for their to be harm done. I would suggest not eating tuna every day strictly for the case of variety, certainly not mercury.

Take your NAC, Glutathione, & Selenium ... and don't forget to detox and have some chelation therapy done periodically ... with these you'll be fine ...
You'll know there's a problem when you start to turn into the Mad Hatter ...

Yeah I honestly think you'd have to eat more like 30+ cans a week and it would still take time to cause a problem.

I dunno man.
According to the gotmercury calculator over 15oz a week puts you over the EPA limit for mercury (for a 160 lb person).
My IQ was tested several times over my life and this last time I took a test it dropped significantly- by 14 points (serious).
I don't know if mercury really did cause brain damage to me, because the whole mercury thing is controversial, but I'd rather not take the risk of brain damage.
I used to eat about two cans of tuna a day (sometimes three or four) because it was an inexpensive and lean protein source.
I pray that it didn't make me stupider or cause brain damage in anyway, but I have no way of knowing.

I would laugh, but 14 points is actually a lot... have you noticed a difference in brain function in every day life? Maybe the tests weren't accurate/valid.

If you have an Eskimo descent, you're probably fine with 3 servings/week.

FWIW, a food source high in selenium (which is a mercury "magnet" that bonds to it & allows it to be passed thru you) is tuna....
