I'd say genetics, body type, training, and perhaps his vision of what a great physique should be. He might have just had different goals than the rest of the cats out there

Well, I dunno. I read that he has two or three softboiled eggs for breakfast, and he said that once in a while a little butter on his wheat toast sure was good. Plus he ran a mile a day.
But I think it was teh winny.

I'm sure he did train for mass, to a degree, at least for building up his size. Not a high proportion of people people walking around with 16 1/2 inch lean arms.
I don't know if conditioning, high rep training had anything to do with it. He targeted his physique with a close eye on his symmetry.
If you're hoping to emulate his training, you're barking up the wrong tree.

I think Zane used WAAY lighter weights than other bodybuilders of the era and strived for mind-muscle connection more than sheer size.
This article/interview suggests that Zane squats with around 200 lbs and uses 85 lb or 90 lb dumbells for his final sets of flat dumbell bench presses.
http://www.musclenet.com/frankzane.htm
Also there was a video on youtube where Zane is training legs along with Kevin Levrone and maybe Shawn Ray where he mentions he only does around 250 lbs on leg presses.

I don't believe Frank was natural. To answer your question about how a smaller guy could win the O, keep in mind that when Zane won his Olympias (77-79) the competition consisted of 2 categories: Over 200 and Under 200 lbs. Therefore 1 of the 2 finalists HAD TO BE under 200 lbs. That is why up until 80 or 81, the Olympia final was a showdown between the bigger guy and the smaller guy. Mentzer vs. Zane in 79, or more notably Arnold vs. Franco as seen in Pumping Iron. Therefore Zane had no incentive to be huge, because he could dominate his weight class the way he was. Of course the Mr. O no longer uses the weight class system, and greater mass has been the aesthetic preference of IFBB judges for many years.

Frank Zane on eggs:
I have found eggs to be extremely valuable to the bodybuilder. If you are training hard, you don't have to worry about getting a high cholesterol from the eggs.

Don't forget that Frank was also the most ripped. He was the first of the super-ripped bbers, later superceded by Rich Gaspari. A very important bber.

no he used the same stuff everybody did, he just had less capacity for mass, the guy competed for a looong time before he won the olympia....spent the whole time getting his conditioning on another level than the rest of the guys of his era and getting perfect proportions....but natural? no.

These threads are moronic. The only people who know for sure they are natural are the people themselves. Does Frank Zane post here?
