    Joint pain after drinking alcohol?

I have noticed a trend over the last few years that I get a fair amount of generalized joint pain (not gout) after a night of drinking. (Especially if it is red wine). One suggested mechanism is that the alcohol increases histamine release and slows it's break down resulting with inflammation.

Anyone else have problems with this?

Yes - it's primarily dehydration, along with other effects of the alcohol. Try drinking one large glass of water for every glass of wine, the problem disappears. Cheers!!

It was not related to dehydration. I had drank more water than wine and usually do. We are talking about 3 glasses. My alcohol tolerance is large enough to go for more. There is something else involved here. I have noticed in the past that red wine specifically can cause this and I am starting to think it may be the preservatives used.

I don't recall joint pain specifically but I do notice that the day after having wine I usually have mild flu like symptoms.

Some wines have a lot of sulfites (or is that sulfates...) and some Chinese wines and beer add formaldehide...

I agree. If I have wine, I always chase it with plenty of water. I probably should have said "When" I have wine.

I know this is an older thread, but found this at google. I too am having joint pain. I had considered dehydration but I drink a lot of water. Because of a diet I'm on I gave up alcohol for a month, while also starting some vitamins for joint paint. It's been getting better. I drank alcohol Saturday and Sunday night. Not much. Saturday a couple glasses of wine, and Sunday a couple beers. This morning I woke up with the worst joint pain I've had in weeks. Am definitely wondering if its alcohol related at this point.

Sounds like a food allergy/intolerance. Not necessarily the alcohol itself, but some other ingredient. Like sulfites. Any wheezing symptoms by any chance?

I have this issue as well. I drank a lot when I was younger, cut drinking for 3 years while bodybuilding and now once in a while I drink. Whenever I drink I have somewhat swollen but mostly painful joints in hands, knees, hips. You name it.
I have found this could potentially be due to a few things:
    1. Liver enzymes can't take the alcohol and process well enough therefor inflammation and dehydration can occur. Taking Lipotropics can help but also it could be damage from drinking in my younger years.
    2. The symptoms of RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis) are consistent with this and as alcohol triggers inflammation, it would be logical that drinking would trigger symptoms of RA...there may be a real tendency towards developing RA so anti-inflammatory diet would be appropriate.
I will be speaking with my Naturopathic M.D. about this and let you know what I find out.
