The only safe and most effective way is to hit a heavy bag over and over with PROPER form. Learn to punch while moving too for even better neural response. Remember throw your hips into it, a punch is a whole body movement where the body works in unison to emit maximum force. Snap your hips and torso into it timed with the extention of the arm to the traget.

The best way to slow yourself down is to tense your muscles.
Keep yourself relaxed, power doesn't come from a stiff arm, it comes from a big arm (which you can only increase the weight of with mass-building exercise) and speed.Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.

Its a lot about your core and just overall strength. Just lift weights you dont have to be huge to throw a hard punch, just stay fit.
But whatever you do, DONT punch with dumbells in your hands. LOL. Ive trainded martial arts most of my life and im telling you thats not a good idea at all. Infact it probably can be bad for you, boxing isnt like resistance training you cant apply the same training techniques to everything.

I agree.
I go boxing too, do the speed bag to work on .. well, speed. Shadowboxing is good too, try doing combos (fast) when shadowboxing. My trainer helps me work on speed by doing 6 uppercuts all in one quick motion.
Don't worry too much about punching HARD yet, once you get the speed the strength will come with it. Besides, in boxing -- if you're able to hit your opponent and he wasn't able to block it (because of speed and not strength) it will affect him more than hitting him really hard but he was able to block it.
But overall the most important thing in boxing is your form. If you're fast but yet have wrong form then it is useless. Twist your torso, extend your arm, etc. You don't really use your arms when you punch you use everything from your upper arm to your shoulders to your lats and the rest of your lower body for support.
Good luck!

If you want to work on speed (speedbag) mix and match your routine. Use the right, then the left, then left and right, you know what I mean.
I do a L R LL R L RR pattern then keep doing that til I'm really fast. When my arms are quite tired I do L R L R L R just alternating then I go back into L R LL R L RR. Then from that I do an speedbag exercise where you hit the bag first with your left hand then the right hand follows right away after it (all in one motion), then after that you do the same but with your right hand first.
Anyway I don't really have a specific routine but I mix everything up with the exercises and the speed. I try to keep the highest speed that I can go for about 1 minute then I slow down and go faster and etc.
I use some basic drum snare patterns (left and right hand exercises) as a basis for my speedbag patterns.. I play drums. Haha. But that's just me.
You'll find your own style eventually

About shadow boxing with weights, it does have some benefits, mainly in strengthening the muscles,as you work it from a different angle from curls n skullcrushers. What it also does is make your hands feel lighter if you perform a shadow boxing round without weights. If you are going to do this, never use dumbells, use hand weights, n never lock out.
About increasing speed, speed ball, floor to ceiling ball both work great, but only once you've taken the time to learn the technique, as opposed to wanting to look good (you will look better with proper technique). Combos in shadow boxing help, also, skip n hit the pads.
In Short, train your ass off in the boxing gym.
Thats my opinion anyway, hope ive helped.
