Red face acupuncture for tendonitis

OK, I've tried cortisone, physical therapy, ART/chiropractic, and just plain old rest for tendonitis in my shoulder. And it's still there.

Does anyone have experience with acupuncture? Tiny needles are definitely my last resort, but some people I know swear by it.

Anyone?

I had a friend taking chinese medicine and she used to "practice" on me. Never helped my shoulder at all but did seem to reduce the pain in my elbow. Sometimes I looked and felt like a pincushion. I got a tat on my left back and I have never had the problem again with my left shoulder. Go figure, Still clunks and pops but has never hurt since that day.

Just curious... how long did you rest it? I've heard it can take up to 8 weeks or more. For me, I had to completely quit doing flat bench (probably the culrpit that did the damage to begin with). I went to inclines, and dropped back the weight. It took about a year for me before the pain was completely gone. I still don't do flat benches.

Cell Protector

I have not tried accupunture. However, I have done the physical therapy, chiropractic route. I play soccer and softball. After playing soccer, my ankle would hurt like hell. After softball, it was my shoulder. A friend told me about a product she used called "Cell Protector" available at GNC. I tried it. After 2 weeks of use, I was able to enjoy both sports without pain. There was no change to my diet or excercise regimen. Only the addition of the Cell Protector. Everyone is different and everyone may not have the same results. It worked for me and may work for you. Hope this helps.

I swear by acupuncture. I had a torn rotor cuff and did the therapy suggested by my orthopedic. I got through it ok but still had lots of pain after 4 months of therapy. I decided on acupuncture since nothing else worked and after 4 treatments, I was able to bench without ANY pain. That was 20 yrs ago and I am still pain free.

Quote:
the worst thing that could happen is that you GET BETTER
The worst thing that could happen is catching a highly multiple-antibiotic resistant flesh-eating bacteria from a contaminated needle and dying slowly and horribly over the course of a few days. ;-)

Well, virtually impossible paranoid scenarios aside, acupuncture is a psuedoscience. The theories that it's based on were decisively killed by modern medical science a long time ago. There are no ki lines, no chakra points, etc.; just a lot interesting chemistry and cellular structures.

So, does that mean it doesn't work? Maybe, but not necessarily. That their theories are wrong doesn't mean the treatment can't have benefits. The most obvious explanation would simply be placebo (when people hope/expect to feel better, they usually do), but there are other possibilities as well. One possibility is that it serves as a way to release natural pain-killing endorphins. Another is that the stimulation of the needles may 'distract' the nervous system from other aches and pains.

So, it's entirely possible that you'll get some symptom relief from acupuncture. The problem is that however it works (or doesn't work) it can't do anything for the underlying physical problem (such as a damaged knee joint.) So, at best it's like taking aspirin or such, masking the problem (which sometimes is all you need/want.) There's probably no harm in trying it; just don't drink the 'alternative medicine' magic Kool-aid.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tendinitis

I get tendinitis in my wrist and elbow sometimes. For me, buffered aspirin, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Fish oil capsules, green tea, mega doses of MSM and Glucosamine/Chondroitin help. Many of these are antioxidants and will help if the tendinitis is caused by inflammation.
