    Runny nose during cardio

It seems like whenever I'm on the elliptical, my nose starts to run. This happens pretty much every time. Does anyone else experience this?

Do you have problems with your sinuses? If they swell shut a lot, cardio might force them open and let everything that gets trapped up there out. I had problems like that before my sinus surgery...I was so happy to be able to breathe through my nose (until things got so bad that even physical activity didn't help), but it sucked that along with being able to breathe came uncontrollable drainage during certain points of my workout.

There are times when I feel I can't breath as well as I should. Maybe my sinuses do swell up sometimes. But yeah, it's annoying to be doing cardio and sniffling all the time or drenching my towel in snot hehe.

If you have allergies 24/7 like I do, then you just get used to it. I am constantly blowing my nose thru-out my workout, and cardio is the absolute worst! Some of the other gym members have begun to call me "The Foghorn".

I can now blow my nose while running @ 8 mph without missing a beat!

Eliptical will do it to you every time! Switch to the bike. Sorry, could not resist. I am in a stupid mood tonight. On the serious note, it could be different things. I'd talk to the doc.

I'd definitely go get it checked out because sinus problems can turn into very serious things. I don't want to panic you by telling you my story, but it is important to make sure that you're not having issues with something that can get out of control.

Careful, you might have Exercise induced Asthma

Or you suffer from nasal allergies. I am not trying to alarm you, please don't think that. Maybe that is the worse it gets for you and your condition would never go beyond the stuffy-runny nose. But It never hurts to be safe.

I do have exercise induced rhinitis (I do have asthma). I noticed that it depends on the temperature at the gym. IF it is very cold I get it bad but if it is warm it doesn't even happen. **Nastyness alert** Most of the time the secretions are clear but at times it is accompanied by mucus and it annoys the heck out of me. It is embarrassing when it gets that bad and I get paranoid when i talk to people. It is gets bad to the point my chest feels funny I just take a "puff" and that is the end of it for me.

I didn't thought anything about it until you mentioned that you have difficulty breathing sometimes and swelling of the sinuses (again, I don't know how bad it gets for you). Do you get "weeze? Can you breath fine through your lungs or is it only that your nose gets "stuffed"?

You should go to an asthma specialist and get yourself tested for exercise induced asthma. I don't see them telling you to stop cardio but at least they might prescribe you with something to "prevent" a serious attack from ever happening. Here are some links on the subject:

It doesn't matter what the temp. is, if I'm running within 10 to 15 minutes the sinuses are flowing (thank goodness I'm alone and outside). I have perfected "The Farmers Blow"

I have chronic sinusitis, but since I started running I don't get very many sinus infections anymore. But my nose runs each and everytime I run, it's always clear and I just bring a kleenex and tuck it into my fuel belt.

Thanks for the info. The secretions are always clear like water. As for the stuffy nose I only get it once in a while and it's usually one nostril that's slightly stuffed (it doesn't get all the way clogged, I can still breath, just not as well). I can breath fine other than that.

I had this the first few weeks of training REALLY BAD, but it eventually went away. I assumed it was some type of detox or something. If you've been training awhile and it's consistent, I'm not sure, but would like to know the answer. Can you post an update when you determine for sure what the problem is? Thanks, T

I take a over the counter allergy medicine whenever I get that at different times of the year and it helps. If you have that going on all the time and it gets to be constant trouble I`d go to the doctor.

I get runny nose with cardio if the temps are low, especially annoying when out on my dirtbike. It's not easy to do the "farmer's blow" or "snot rocket" as my kids call it with a full face helmet on!

I did have bad allergies when I lived in the SW but since moving back to the NW almost 10 years ago they've gone away for the most part but the cold weather cardio brings on the runny nose.

I'd be interested to know why too.

    former queen of cardio says

as a former cardio machine, runny noses are really common. don't fret about it; your body is just working hard and so are your lungs, so you're just clearing out a bunch of the junk that's built up in them all day. if this runnyness is accompanied by signs of a cold or sinus infection (headache, etc.) then if i were you i'd see a doc, but if it's limited to just when you are on the elliptical i think you'll be ok. maybe pack some extra tissues, though, so you don't leave any snotty surprises on the elliptical handles for the next user

I haven't had time to go check it out, but I'll update if I do. And yes, it's pretty consistent, just when I do cardio and when I eat spicy foods.

This is great news!! I'm all for cleaning and detoxing naturally...so this gives me an extra reason to enjoy cardio...Lord knows cardio is most difficult for me. T

Hey Patrese, this is why it's so cool for me to train at HOME. Girl, I breathe loud enough to hear me 10 feet away, sweat, blow my nose, self-talk to hit 10's, and I won't even mention other natural sound effects. lol It's not very pretty or lady like AT ALL. Whew! T

Same here, with the training at home, although, the occasional "other natural sound effects" do tend to make my spotters (the kids) fall apart laughing.

I am exactly in the same situation as your. My nose starts running when I do any type of cardio and as soon as I eat spicy food. its been like this for a long time. Have you found a remedy yet. Thanks again.

This is really common for outdoor runners and cyclists (hence sleeved shirts/jackets and gloves for these sports often having a patch of material meant for wiping,) but I'm not sure if it's as common indoors. Probably more annoying than anything, but if You can see a doc, it certainly wouldn't hurt to see if you have something going on in your sinuses.
