    One thing that confuses me about this 'slow twitch for endurance' thing, is a lot of low-intensity endurance exercises still get performed at a kind of high velocity. I mean, even for marathon joggers, if the fiber was contracting very slow, would it be kicking in right away the second they put their leg down and started to push off?

    I'd almost think it would be high twitch at first...

    Another thing that is confusing here: if slow twitch fibers activate slowly, how is it that fast twitch activate faster when I thought the slow twitches had to turn on first and be unable to do the work before faster twitch motor units got activated?

    This article contains some misunderstanding though. Anaerobic glycolysis does not produce lactate. This glycolysis is the first step in ALL carb metabolism. This includes the metabolism of carbs in slow-twitch fibers which use oxygen. The glycolysis produces pyruvate, and it is what happens to pyruvate that dictates the (an)aerobicness.

    When there is oxygen around, the pyruvate enters the krebs cycle and gets fully used for energy.

    When there is not, the pyruvate ferments (turns into lactate), produces SOME energy, but the lactate gets sent out into the blood to make its way to the liver. It still holds a lot of potential energy, and it is then built up into liver glycogen.
