International operation disrupts performance and image enhancing drugs trade - Tuesday, 25th September 2007
Australian Customs has issued a warning against the import of illegal performance and image enhancing drugs (PIEDs) following a major international operation which led to a
50 per cent jump in seizures at the Australian border.
United States authorities yesterday announced the culmination of Operation Raw Deal - an international investigation targeting the global underground trade in PIEDs. The operation involved numerous countries including Australia.
Australian Customs contributed to the international investigation; Operation KASHA was announced in July this year. Figures indicate Customs detected 1405 separate seizures of PIEDs between October 2006 and July 2007.
145 search and seizure warrants were executed across the country and 29 people were charged with a range of prohibited import offences. Many of these cases are still before the courts and Customs investigations are ongoing.
Customs acting National Manager Investigations Doug Nicoll said overseas intelligence gathering and data sharing was critical to the success of both KASHA and the US-led international operation.
"The international operation demonstrates the seriousness with which authorities throughout the world are treating steroid smuggling.
"These results should serve as a warning to anyone considering importing PIEDs illegally that there is a high risk of detection and prosecution.
"Customs has worked closely with authorities throughout the world to combat a growing international trade in illegal performance and image enhancing drugs," Mr Nicoll said.
"Customs and its domestic and international law enforcement partners will continue to target the illegal trade in PIEDs."
Mr Nicoll said Customs would also continue to work closely with domestic agencies such as the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority to support its role in combating drugs in sport.
Penalties for illegal importation of PIEDs can include up to five years in gaol and/or a $110,000 fine.
Anyone with information about illegal importation of performance and image enhancing drugs should contact the 24 hour Customs Hotline on 1800 06 1800.
