Running, and stair steppers and other low intensity stuff is rubbish for the purpose, 'cos it doesn't build muscle. Even if at 50 you are the same weight, and BMI you were when you were 20, unless you do strength training, you'll have much more fat, and much less muscle, and even less connective tissue and bone mass. You'll be far less robust.
So the writers suggestion you forgo exercise and just don't eat as much is nonsense. I'd hate to see what that guy looks like, if he is over 40.
Lifting weights is the way to go, so you change your body composition, and burn more calories even when you're propped against tha couch with beer, or in my case a glass of milk, looking at the goggle box. Your joints will thank you as well, if you do it right.
Just look at all the success stories on the threads. The article was written for people who know nothing of strength training, by someone in the same boat.
Come on, in the example, who the hell has a better physique, the lumberjack or the taylor. Oh, I forgot, the lumberjack is way heavier, and to the writer this is a bad thing. Wonder what he'd think of my long term goals, 260 at 15% bf, and 300kg deads for reps.
That article was really aimed at people who want an excuse to quit before they make progress.........so they can avoid all that damn hard work.
