state trooper vs. city police officer (USA)

what are the main differences between being a state police officer and a county/city police officer in America?

we all know the stereotypes, but what are the real pros and cons of each. is 1 job more prestigious? harder to achieve? better pay?

I assume state troopers make a bit more money. Which job would you rather have?

I know a connecticut state trooper who makes 95 grand a year, not including bonuses. Also, every 2 years he gets a new undercover car, which he can do ANYTHING he wants with it. they pay for his gas in that car, and he can use it for personal use as long as the sirens are taken down. He can crash it and they'll just give him a new one...

He also has this crazy army laptop in his car that's indestructable (built to army standards, worth over 10k). It's connected to satelites and he can basically look up anything on it, no matter where he is...

State troopers get good pay with good benefits. Let's not forget, if he ever gets pulled over and he's off duty, he can basically get out of any ticket, no matter how fast he's going...

IN Georgia at least it goes

Georgia State Patrol > County Sheriff Deputies > Local Cops

Pay isn't that great at GSP at first but it tops out higher, they basically work all the car crashes on state roads and such. Georgia Bureau of Investigation does all the serious work though.

reps for responding. i was just thinking about different career options, that's why i made this thread. I thought it would be an interesting job to be a state trooper. Only concern would be that they sit in a car all day and don't move around. Is this a misconception? or do they really drive up and down the highway all day long. might as well be a truck driver- get all those back problems and aches from sitting all day.

State troopers have jurisdiction over the entire state highways, but only do traffic enforcement. County sheriffs have jurisdiction within the entire county while maintaining circuit courts, normally have swat teams and k9 units, they also enforce all laws (not just traffic). Local police maintain municipal court and have jurisdiction within city/village/township and enforce all laws.

Troopers ONLY enforce traffic on state highways, they generally have very little discretion due to the expectation of high productivity (they write A LOT of tickets, minimal warnings)(no there is no quota... they are illegal). If you wanna do police work... be the police/deputy

I see this state trooper about 5-10 times a year at his family's party. So every time I see him we're both drunk at the party, and he always tells me about the **** he does.

He told me he beats the **** out of his car, and does over 140 mph on the highways... "the only way to catch people speeding is to go faster than them so you catch up to them" was what he told me lol...

That is not the case in NY, especially in the rural communities where they may be the only police force around.

Your right actually, occasionally they may be the only sworn LEO in that certain area. It's funny as hell when your closest backup is a state trooper and they respond to a domestic looking around like "$%^ what the hell do I do"

Troopers go through better training in an academy, or that is how missouri state patrol is. I belive this is what make them better. I just think of city police as some bonner that got picked on in school. Plus alot of people go from the military into trooper academy. Thats just my thought on it.

Go on a ride out with both agencies. They can answer most of ur questions and u will see what the job can really be like. Also, find some friends who are in law enforcement, and get to know the process b4 applying.

In California the State Troopers are the Highway Patrol and they take over any pursuit that crosses multiple city or county lines. Their jurisdiction is state wide and they do a lot of things other than vehicle code and moving violation enforcement.
