    Maryland's strongest Man 2005

I did the "Mid-Atlantic Strongest Man" yesturday and placed 3rd out of 7 guys.

This is one of the heaviest and hardest shows in NASS for the lightweights 200lb and under, there were no sloutches there, I had to work hard for that 3rd place.

I won two awards, a battle axe for my 3rd place finish, and a sword for the most "heart" award, because I've kept comiing back to these shows and am now hanging with the top guys in maryland.

I weighed in at 187.5lbs the other guys weighed in the night before and weighed over 200 on contest day, there was one guy my weight.

First event 210lb axle clean and press for reps NO CONTINENTAL CLEANS ALLOWED each rep must be cleaned no jerks allowed.
I did 1-squatclean and 1-push press, BIG PR!!! 4th place.

250lb an arm farmers and 700lb yoke for 20yards ea. I got the yoke about 3/4 of the distance, the farmers walk was easy, 3rd place.

stones 1st stone 255lbs easy, second stone 270lbs got it, couldn't lap the 315lb stone, I should start doing SLDL's now, I also now own a 329lb stone, so I can work with this, 4th place on stones.

tire flip I did 10flips but only got 9.5 flips in the 90sec. 3rd place.
I now know I can attack this tire harder without losing my wind.

conan's wheel, 480lbs loaded but this felt like 700lbs and I'm used to going counter clockwise, we had to go clockwise, 1-1/4 rotations, 4th place

carry and drag 245lb sandbag and 500lb chain drag 20yards ea. blasted through this, 3rd place.

I'll be turning in my entry for "Maryland's Strongest Man" ASAP, it's august 6th same events, same promoter, only heavier and thiers a fire hydrent carry for distance it will be the hardest AM. contest for the "lights" yet.

I feel good today, my sun burn hurts more then my body, my conitioning is on I'm only slightly sore in my upper back traps, and legs. I had fast recovery inbetween events, it was an awsome day.

    tuesday 5/10/05

front squats, worked up to 255lbs, 1-single PR, (had more in me)

2"axle thickbar, hangcleans above the knees, worked up to 141lbs, 4-singles, collars tight, no rotation.

2"axle deadlift double overhand grip, worked up to 269.5lbs, 2-singles, attempted a 3rd but my grip was done.

messed around with "sumo" stlye deadlifts.
    320lbs 1-single, semi-wide
    320lbs, 1-single, wide-stance.

I'm starting off light on these, since I use a wider stance when lifting stones (because of the width of the stones) I'm seeing if "sumos" will help.
while doing those sumos, I could really feel it in my hamstrings (the weakness), I'm sure I can deadlift more weight conventional right now.

I'll do lighter weight with the sumo style to get used to it, and use the conventional style on the heaviest sets, since I only do singles at 1-3sets I can get the best out of both, we will see if my "sumo" surpasses my "conventional".

    entry form goes out today!!!

man that **** is sooo fun, I get the best high after these contests, if anyone is interested in competing and can do some of the events or is strong (win or lose) just do them, even if you lose you will find a new strength inside yourself.

    thursday 5/12/05
2"axle 141.5lbs hangcleans above the knees, 2-singles, did some pressing with it.

2"axle heavy pulls to my belly button, 246lbs 4-singles

    350,380,and 400lbs 1-single ea. standing on 100lb plate (easy)
410lbs 1-single standing on 45lb plate (smooth as silk)

one-arm snatch 86lb 2"axle 1-single ea. arm (used too much tri with my right arm) so I did another single ea. arm (the left blasted overhead)

    saturday 5/14/05
dragging today, not much sleep, slight hangover, and it is HOT outside, but still nailed some PR's.

2"axle 142.5lbs 1-hangclean above the knees, some pressing (little leg drive)

    2"axle clean and push press, 165lbs 1-single, 187lbs 1-single (warm-up)

2"axle continental clean and split jerk, 214.5lbs 1-single (PR)

yoke lockouts, worked up to 760lbs and held for 30sec., also did farmers carry with a 100lb plate in ea. hand, 2-trips outside, 2-trips inside.

partial squats starting from the bottom position on my yoke,
crossbar at nipple level, 480lbs 1-single (very easy)
crossbar at upper mid-section level, 425lbs 1-single PR, hard I really had to push it on that.

    saturday 5/21/05

went up Sayre PA to James "Smitty" Smith's house, for a strongman training day and cookout, me and Dan Cenidoza stayed the night at Jedd Johnson's house on friday, we arrived at Smitty's house around 11:00 am or so, I met Eli,Brad, and pete there, those guys are young, late teens, Eli, is a big kid, and Brad and Pete were a little shorter then me, but weighed about the same, and they were great overhead pressers, Big Jedd pressed a 300lb log overhead.

I brought my 2"rope 100' me and Dan were going to challenge the Deisel guys to a tug-o-war deisel crew vs maryland crew, and they had some challenges for us as well.

We started off with the "viking Press" (never done this before) I got 1-rep with 260lbs and failed twice with 280lbs.

next was the log clean and press, it looked like a 8"log, they jumped up to 225lbs fast (I failed to press it) so I did a press with 195lbs, and did a clean with 245lbs, I attempted a clean with 265lbs but missed.

so far these guys in my weight group were kicking my ass with the overhead stuff, but I knew my events were coming up.

conans wheel, they had one with the biggest bar I've ever seen, I knew it was going to be challeging, My first run was with 12-45lbplates + a 10lber
that was 550lbs loaded on the carrier + over 100lbs with the bar and apperatous, I did 1-full rotation, I was now hanging with the big boys, next set we loaded 14-45ers 630lbs + the apperatous, I did 3/4 of a rotation, then we got Brad 185lbs to sit on the weight, 810lbs + the apperatous I only lifted it and took 1-step, Eli,jedd, and Dan walked farther with it (heavy ****).

then we messed around a bit, some big black dude off the street came over and was watching us, then Jedd started giving him grippers to try, the guy almost closed the #3, and he lifted the "inch" dumbell with ease.

then they set up a medely, farmers, yoke and tire flip, they had a 900lb tire I decided to give the tire a shot I got it up to my stomach, but couldn't get a grip on it to flip it over, I fought with that thing on my mid-section for well over a minuite.
So I just went for the medely I did 265lb and arm farmers just under 50' (that was easy) 2"handles also, then I don't know what the yoke was 500-600lbs but that was easy too, then I attempted the 900lb tire again, and just couldn't flip it over.
Dan flipped there 700lb impossible (they claimed) tire because no one could get a grip on it (no one has yet to flip it) well Dan did it, he!,he!

the we ate, Dan realiszed we didn't do the tug-o-war, so after getting on Jedd about it for a while, Jedd finially gave in, and it was me and Dan vs Jedd and Smitty, it was looking tough for me and Dan at first, but then Smitty slipped and me and Dan won, the next round was me and Dan vs Smitty and Pete, yeah, me and Dan won that too.

just when we thought we were done Smitty just kept seeing whats feats we all could do, at this point it was just me,Dan,Jedd, and Smitty, they started having chin-up and pull-up contests, then I started doing pull-ups with my middle fingers using "eagle loops" I did 5.
Then Smitty hands me a full deck of cards and I tore them (first time ever) Smitty handed me another deck and I tore them too, damn 2-pr's
He handed me another deck, but I was spent didn't tear that one, Smitty tore 2-decks at once, twice (crazy).

Smitty had to get back to his family, so after a long day of PR's it was over, damn that was a good time, Jedd, and Smitty are good peoples, and I'm looking forward to our next meeting, there planning on being at "Marylands Strongest" in August.

    2"axle 119lbs 1-powersnatch, 1-overhead squat
    1-powersnatch, 2-overhead squats.
the powersnatches were the best ever, very explosive overhead, it's tough doin a powersnatch with a thickbar.

    2"axle one-arm straddle deadlift, 130lbs 1-single ea. arm (solid)

2"axle 146.5lbs hangcleans above the knees, 3-singles, on the last single I did 5-speed push presses

2" axle bent over rows, 165lbs 1-triple (simple), gettin a feel for them.

2"axle heavy pulls with locked elbows, pulled to about my bellybutton, 247lbs 3-singles, held and jerked on top of my mid-section on the last single.

thats it, I hit some PR's, I was still a tad sore from saturday, my right glute was aching and into my back, but after the workout I felt great, and I feel fine today, got another big training day coming up on sunday at Graham's house, I'll rest today and hit some PR's thursday.

    thursday 5/27/05

    went to the gym today

front squats, worked up to 260lbs for a single ass to grass PR, pretty tough

clean and push press, worked up to 200lbs 1-single

deadlifts. worked up to 415lbs for a double, standing on a 45lb plate

    saturday 5/29/05

me and Dan went to Graham's house for some strongman event training.

    we warmed up with kettlebells.

super-yoke on pavement incline driveway, 700lbs 50-60' 2-sets, set-2 was up the incline, best heavy yoke carry I've ever done (soild) no belt, no drops.

    stones 255,270 (easy), again I couldn't lap this damn 315lber, the width doesn't help, I believe it's a 20"er.

farmers walk, I suggested going up to 270 an arm, Graham said "bratha, it's easier to load it to 275 an arm, just add quaters man". so thats what we did.

farmers walk 275lbs an arm, in rough grassy ground I got about 40' until I dropped them, no belt, heaviest I've ever gone.

that was all for the day, I hit all PR's except stones, and I feel good, I dont' feel overtrain or banged up too bad really.

    Hey,

Could you list some of your PRs for power clean, push press, bench press, deadlift, squat, etc?

We are very close in weight, (i dont know your height im 5'10.5") and was curious to see what kind of strength you have in the gym.

Congrats on your 3rd place! That is awesome!
I never knew they had under200lbs contests.

    Any pictures from the meet?

I never did much gym work, I can't push press 225,(jerk highly possible) thats all I can tell you, my deadlift would be my strong point, but I don't go all out on it so I don't know what I can pull,(500 very possible, if not very soon) I'm 5'8, if your lookin for a comparision for gym lifts to strongman events, I'll tell you that everyone was taller then me at my contest and that there were guys I placed higher than who could put more weight overhead then me, but they couldn't "clean" the thickbar, they could deadlift and squat more then me, but had a hard time carrying a heavy yoke and farmers, and conan's wheel. I've been working on my gym lifts though and technique work, so I got a late start, but am catching up in gym lifts.

well when it comes down to it, strength in the competitions events is more important than gym lifts.

I've never touched any strongman apparatus, so i was trying to get a feel for your strength through the gym lifts.

Good luck at your next event

irishbuilder, are close to MD, it's route 301 in Waldorf,MD turn on Demarr Rd. go the end it's "White Plains Park"

Gwailo168, yeah, you gotta do some event training, in my case "strongman" gave me a good base or foundation for gym weightlifting, as most people built a good base from powerlifting/gym weightlifting. strongman appealed more to me then powerlifting, so thats what I went for and trained events, now I need some gym lifting and it is helping improvement in strongman.
For instance in oct of 04 we did a farmers hold 265lb an arm, well I won first place in that event because of all the lockout holds and grip training I did, but it took a long ass pull off the ground on the deadlift (I wasn't training deadlift) people were surprised I pulled it, (my lockout was strong though), well after that I knew I had to deadlift, and I pulled 275 and arm (550 total) pretty easy this past weekend.

I don't need too much event work now a days, I get good improvement with these exercises-
lockouts, deadlifts, a variation of olyimpic "quick lifts" (using a thickbar for grip), variations with sled dragging, one-armed farmers walks/suit-case DL's

the one-arm farmers/suit-case DL, has made me a stronger deadlifter, and improvded my carrying abilities, deadlifts are a must, I don't need to train farmers, conan's wheel too often (once every few months now) yoke I need to hit at least every month, lockouts and overload holds keep strength going up on these weekly, I have goals of hitting a 800++ yoke for a good distance and a 300lb an arm farmers walk, or heavier (heavy as possible). If I have oppertunities to go train other apperatouses, heavier tires ect, I take advantage of that.

    tuesday 5/31/05

partial overhead squat and hold using my "yoke" 290lbs got it supported overhead on the first attempt, and held overhead for just under 10sec. PR,

I did some other light stuff, same as thursady 6/2/05 only 1-2lbs lighter today.

    good end to the month.

    wensday sled drags light 200lbs

    thursday 6/2/05

    2"axle warmed-up with "hang snatch"
    126lbs 1-powersnatch, 1-overhead squat

    2"axle one-armed straddle deadlift 137lbs 1-single ea. arm (easy)

2"axle hangcleans above the knees, 148lbs 1-double, 1-single and 4-presses using very little leg drive (easy)
I'm going to work up like this and only do a heavy "jerk" every couple of weeks, hangcleans above the knees are working great.

    2"axle bent over row, 181.5lbs 1-single (simple)

I did all of the above on tuesday only 1-2lbs lighter, all PR's

2"axle "pulls" 137lbs (I thought I had 148lbs, damn, felt very strong though) 1-single, 1-double (I think thats a PR), 1-single pulled just above my belly button.

    one-armed farmers walk 2"handle 216.5lbs 55', quick arm switch, 55' back (nasty,solid though)

suit-case deadlift 2"handle on farmers impl. 225lbs 1-single ea. arm (nasty, but solid, held for a few sec.)

deadlift 340lb sumo, 1-single (easy, but don't like this stlye)
conventional deadlift, worked up to 420lbs 1-single standing on a 45lb plate (felt strong)

    saturday 5/4/05

    2"axle warmed-up with "hangsnatch"
    128lbs 1-powersnatch, 1-overhead squat

    2"axle one-arm straddle deadlift, 139lbs 1-single ea. arm (easy)

2"axle hangclean above the knees, 150lbs 4-presses little leg drive

2"axle continental clean and split jerk, 216lbs 1-single

heavy "yoke" under my deck, 765lbs 2-sets, 5-10' raw, no belt, this was a short distance, but it was the longest walk of my life, every step took 110% focus and concentration, I'm only adding 5lbs now.

tire flip 680-700lber, with a 200lb sled harnessed to me, 7-flips, I took short breaths inbetween ea. flip, every flip was a struggle

everything was a PR, this was one of the toughest, hardest training days yet, I was by myself, so all the set-ups and carrying weights was a workout in it's own, buckets of sweat were filled today.

I'm not sore at all today (monday), but will rest today and train tuesday.

    tuesday 5/7/05

went to the gym today to play with a normal barbell.

    warmed-up with hang powersnatch

    140lbs 1-powersnatch, 1-overhead squat (barely parellel)

hangclean above the knees, 155lbs 1-hangclean, 3-push presses, (easy, I couldn't touch this in a hangclean when I first started, now I'm surpassing it)

    160lbs 1-hangclean, 5-push presses (easy)

front squat, worked up to 260lbs, 2-singles (tough)

deadlifts, worked up to 425lbs, 2-singles, standing on a 45lb plate, I had thought it was 420 at first (was supposed to be) no wonder it felt heavier, the last single was slow, but strong. I'll stay at 425, then once I get used to pulling 430 on a plate, I'll go for at least 450 standing on the floor.

Good workout man. I can understand it.

You got a big pull. If you work those cleans frequently, you'll be over 200 in no time.

YEAH!!!!, thats the plan raffiki, 200 should be shorty around the corner on a reg. barbell, but hangcleans on the axle, thats another story, oh and I'm feeling maybe 200 for a powersnatch in near future also, damn I love the "quick lifts"

wensday, sled drags in this damn heat, few pounds over 200 now and making long distance work of it in only 15-20mins.

    thursday 6/9/05

I was really feelin tired today, beat-up too, Dan Cenidoza had invited Dan Praydis, and his son Dan, to come down today (there on the gripboard) they live about 15-mins away, so we all may be gettin together alot, Cenidoza wanted to show them some kettlebell stuff, and Dan JR. wanted to train some strongman events, (the've never done this stuff before)

before the guys came over I warmed-up with some axle "quick lifts"

2"axle, 130lbs 1-powersnatch, 2-overhead squats (just above parallel) the snacth was fast and strong.

    2"axle one-arm straddle deadlift, 141lbs 1-single ea. arm (nice)

2"axle hangcleans above the knees, 152lbs 1-single, 3-presses (little leg drive), 1-single (collars tight)

I was still feelin tired, but once the guys came over I started feelin energetic.

we did some kettlebell stuff, then Dan JR. was excited about using my "conan's wheel", so we set that up, and even though I wasn't planning on any event trainingtoday, I decided to give them a show and did 1-full rotation with 580lbs loaded on it, made easy work of it, but being smart just did 1-rotation.

we did more kettlebell stuff, Dan SR. did some impressive things for training kettlebells for the first time, and his son is a damn strong overhead presser.

I also ripped a deck of cards, but it took forever, everyone thought these cards were tough, I also closed my #2 gripper for them, Cenidoza closed the #3 for 6-7reps, twice, uh, scary!!!!, Dan SR. video taped that, and some other stuff.

    saturday 6/11/05

took a long nap after work on friday, and slept long on sat morning, feelin good today, it's real hot outside, but I gotta get used to it for August.

2"axle warmed-up with hang powersnatch doin little over 100lbs on this.

    2"axle 130.5lbs 1-powersnatch, 1-overhead squat, about parallel

2"axle hangcleans above the knees, 152.5lbs (missed first attempt), 1-single few presses (little legs), 1-single again, collars tight.

2"axle pulls, 149lbs 1-single pulled to my belly button, missed the second one, I'm loosing my grip now.

partial overhead squat and hold on my "yoke" 292lbs got it supported overhead on first attempt, and held for 10sec.

"yoke" lockout lift and hold, 770lbs held for 20sec.

30gal. drum carry, 60'out and back, 2-sets, uh, I was ready to RALF after I carried that back in my basement, the heat doesn't help, I think the barrel is around 200lbs, but it's so damn big, one run with it and you want "no more", I added a big handful of sand for the next run, I'm doing this to prep for the 280lb fire hydrent carry for distance.

    tuesday 6/14/05

warmed-up with 2"thickbar hang powersnatch and overhead squat, and really went for speed on the overhead squats.

    2"axle 133.5lbs 1-powersnatch (fast), 1-overhead squat, hit parallel today.

2"axle 153.5lbs 1-hangclean above the knees (no lockcollars) 3-presses (not much leg)

2"axle 164.5lbs, hangclean just below the knees, attempted with locked collars, failed
loose collars 1-hangclean, 3-presses (little leg drive)

2"axle 185lbs, 1-powerclean, 1-push press, time to start with full powercleans (close to starting)
185lbs bent over rows, 1-triple (semi-wide) thats tough with a thickbar.

since 260-265 is my limits on double overhand 2"thickbar, I'm trying something (don't know if it will work)
2"axle 277lbs deadlift (mixed grip) switched to double overhand grip and tried to hold, yes it did rest a little on my thighs, but when I lowered the weight it was 100% hands (really felt it, we shall see how it goes)

suit-case deadlift, 2"handle farmers impl. worked up to 226lbs, 1-single ea. arm, damn solid, I like this, I'll sky rocket this up, then go back to lighter one-arm walks.

deadlift, worked up to 425lbs 1-single, standing on 100lb plate, still a pr the 100lb plate is higher than what I did last week.

    2"axle 7'long bar one-arm snatch, 86lbs 1-single ea. arm

Nice work dude. Those are good lifts.

forgot to write thursday workout, just "quick lifts" with the axle

    saturday, 6/18/05

woke-up late with a massive hangover.

2"axle warmed-up with powersnatch in the hang above knees, over 105lbs.

    2"axle 136lbs 1-powersnatch (flew past overhead)

2"axle 156lbs 1-hangclean above the knees (no collars) 1-press (no leg drive)

2"axle 167lbs 1-hangclean below the knees (loose collars) 1-press, little leg drive.

2"axle 190.5lbs 1-powerclean (strong), 1-quick split jerk (I figure working the split jerk for speed will improve my push presses)

2"axle 218lbs 1-continental clean, 1-split jerk new PR in the "jerk"

    super yoke, 703lbs 2-sets 40'

haven't felt like typing the same routine everyother day, so I'm just going to type my PR's, I'm doing basically the "quick lifts" tuesday, thursday, and saturday, sled drags once a week, and heavy deads/var.of events 1-2times a week.

    this week-

heavy yoke, 5-10' under my deck, 775lbs 1-set

    suit-case deadlift, 2"handle farmers imple., 235lbs 1-single ea. arm

platform deadlift, 430lbs 1-single standing on 100lb plate

2"axle 115lb powersnatch from the hang above the knees, 1-single

    2"axle powersnatch, 144.5lbs 1-single

    2"axle hangclean above the knees, 166.5lbs 1-single

I'll be going for a heavy deadlift off the floor this month (july) I'll shoot for 455lbs.

last sunday the 3rd me and Cenidoza went to the "university of MD" to work-out with the weightliftin club there, there were some people who post on the gripboard there, like "Manvil", anyway I just did some powersnatching and powercleans and push presses working up to 200lbs, I really wanted my powerclean form crituqed, Jeff told me I need to keep my shoulders over the bar more in the "power position" I developed this flaw from training with that monster thickbar, I think I've improved this.

I decided to go for that 455lb deadlift also that day and got it, but had a slight hitch at the top, thats not a big deal, I pulled 435lbs off a 45lb plate (platform deadlift) yesturday with no hitch.

then we did some kettlebell work.

sat. the 9th I continental cleaned and split jerked 220lbs on my 2"axle for 1-single.
I also flipped my 700lb tire for 6-flips (nonstop) and was pretty winded, I rested than did 8-flips (nonstop) and was rocked.

Tuesday, I really felt motivated to flip this tire more often to improve my wind, Rob seems to be my nemisis, and seems to just beat me by just enough each time, Billy "the dominator" won't be in town on contest day, so I hope Rob shows up to give a good fight (don't know who else is my comp. yet), but if theres an event where I should really shoot for a first place, it's the tire flip.

2"axle worked up to 170.5lbs 1-powerclean than fast bouce off chest and overhead (simple)

170.5lbs 1-hangclean at the knees, quick bounce overhead

181.5lbs 1-hangclean below the knees, quick bounce overhead (simple)
this is lookin good, 20lbs more and I'mm lookin good for 210

    2"axle BOR's 198lbs 3-reps, min. rest 1.5-reps (grip shot)

    deadlift 435, 1-single standing on 45lb plate

700lb tire flip, 10-flips (nonstop flips) better pace than the 9.5-flips I got at last contest, had to of been under 90sec. I struggled on the 10th flip, but kept my tech. through the first 6-8flips, I've done 12-flips a few months ago, but took my time, this was a faster pace, I'll eithier hit the tire again thursday or sunday.
