How do dj's "play" a live concert?

I'm a huge fan of trance but don't know much about what goes into it, what do DJ's do during a live show? Is it considered 'playing' like any band would?
For example I can watch any live Tiesto show and he has all these computers and gadgets and he's constantly fiddling around with them, and he keeps taking his headphones on and off... yet the music sounds like he's just got a cd in there playing on it's own... what's he doing the whole time?

first they produce their own beats ( well pro DJs) on computers and insturments...then they get it on records...They then have 2 turntables and a mixer. A mixer controled which turntable is playing, bass, trebel, med levels.

Music is played in beats...and at certain speeds every 32 beats you get a "break" which then if your using all breakbeat style music which can be slowed and sped up with out changing the sound to much you can sync the beats to "break" at the same time...so 2 record playing at the same time but sounding like one.

This might not make sense but its really really hard to explaine without either writting a novel or showing it in person.

i think it's going to differ from artist to artist. i'm still wondering this myself, as i've been recording trance/electronica orientated music, and i'm not sure how i would do it live. it's usually just one or two guys, and they either have to hire people to help out and play more instruments live, or it just has to be a recorded track being played back. if the guy isn't on a keyboard, or guitar or something, and is just messing with computers, he's not doing all that much, but just trying to look busy. it seems that some artists try to play as much live as they can, but you can only do so much. like, i'll end up with maybe 6 or 7 instrument tracks, and there's no way in hell i can play all of that live, so some of it will just have to be automated, unless i hire people to play each instrument.

also, it's going to depend on if you're actually at a show where the original musician is performing, or if you're at some club, where the dj is simply taking other people's songs, and mixing other **** in.
