walking at a slow to moderate pace on a treadmill or outside for a long term period of time (long term depends on the individual, 30 mins 3 days a week is all I need), or the same walking pace on an elliptical for a long period of time, or interval training are the best 3 in my opinion for retaining most amount of mass possible and losing bodyfat.

Honestly, the best one is the one you can stand to do 3 (if that is the amount you need) to do a week for 30 minutes a day (Again, if that is the amount you need to do each time). If you hate the stair master for example, it doesn't matter how good it is, chances are you will find more excuses not to do it, then say a treadmill if you like the treadmill.

I'll be doing a variation of HIIT. There is a road in front of my house that goes uphill very slightly. I usually sprint 60 yards uphill and then jog downhill and start all over. I'll do this about 12-13 times and I'm bushed. I want to add a little distance running this year, but nothing too long. I think I might start running a mile every week so I can see how fast I'm getting by timing it.
Kicking gravity's ass.

I say do medium/hard cardio 2-4 times a week for most people. Its good for your heart and overall health. If your a hardcore bodybuilder who competes or plans to compete, then you dont want to lose any of that muscle, and I understand. But I think most people are too paranoid about losing muscle and they should be doing more cardio. If your really worried, bump up the protein. If you really dont care about your heart/cardiovascular system then just lift weights.

Many of you guys are completely clueless about the basic laws of thermodynamics.
By the way, walking 40 minutes and running 40 minutes burns different numbers of calories.
However, walking 4 miles and running 4 miles will burn the same number (or almost identical, obviously may be off by a couple calories), and a higher percentage of the calories burned will be fat for the walking condition. The only thing is, walking 4 miles takes MUCH MORE TIME than running 4 miles.

Alright I thought the whole point of HIIT was to get your heart rate up faster. Doesnt that help you burn fat.
Its just me but I dont think I'm going to take advice from Bob on everything. Just because he's roided out and I'm not. Nothing against him but he's gong to burn fat because he's using roid's. So he can use slow cardio.

slow cardio if you wish to minimise muscle loss
