    Depends. Are you willing to lose weight with some muscle (wich means you don't give a ****, you just wanna lose fat) or losing weight with minimal muscle loss?

    walking at a slow to moderate pace on a treadmill or outside for a long term period of time (long term depends on the individual, 30 mins 3 days a week is all I need), or the same walking pace on an elliptical for a long period of time, or interval training are the best 3 in my opinion for retaining most amount of mass possible and losing bodyfat.

    Right now I use the Arc-Trainer set on Interval at level 5 for 16-20 min. I do this 2-3 times a week. In between, I'll go for 30-40 min at a moderate pace with the machine set on manual. I also walk for at least 15-20 min outside a few days a week as well.

    Honestly, the best one is the one you can stand to do 3 (if that is the amount you need) to do a week for 30 minutes a day (Again, if that is the amount you need to do each time). If you hate the stair master for example, it doesn't matter how good it is, chances are you will find more excuses not to do it, then say a treadmill if you like the treadmill.

    I'll be doing a variation of HIIT. There is a road in front of my house that goes uphill very slightly. I usually sprint 60 yards uphill and then jog downhill and start all over. I'll do this about 12-13 times and I'm bushed. I want to add a little distance running this year, but nothing too long. I think I might start running a mile every week so I can see how fast I'm getting by timing it.

    Wait a minute...so what if you walked for ten minutes or so and the body switched over and then you ran? Would it switch back? Or would it continue burning fat at a higher rate?

    I'm still a little confused too. A staedy paced hour walk burns only fat calories while other faster forms of cardio, such as HIIT, burn both fat and muscle. I do not see how barely breaking a sweat walking will burn more fat than sprints.

    I say do medium/hard cardio 2-4 times a week for most people. Its good for your heart and overall health. If your a hardcore bodybuilder who competes or plans to compete, then you dont want to lose any of that muscle, and I understand. But I think most people are too paranoid about losing muscle and they should be doing more cardio. If your really worried, bump up the protein. If you really dont care about your heart/cardiovascular system then just lift weights.

    Weightlifting is good for the heart too! It lowers LDL cholesterol, reduces blood pressure, and strengthens the heart muscle itself. Of course cardio and weightlifting give an overall better benefit than just weightlifting, but pumping iron is still good for the heart. I am enjoying being jacked in my 20s, then will perform more intense cardio in my 30s and older.

    Many of you guys are completely clueless about the basic laws of thermodynamics.

    By the way, walking 40 minutes and running 40 minutes burns different numbers of calories.

    However, walking 4 miles and running 4 miles will burn the same number (or almost identical, obviously may be off by a couple calories), and a higher percentage of the calories burned will be fat for the walking condition. The only thing is, walking 4 miles takes MUCH MORE TIME than running 4 miles.

    I would like to know the answer to his other original question as well. Are the calorie burning monitors on the machines accurate or bull? I usually enter my weight and age and go by the number it gives me.

    Alright I thought the whole point of HIIT was to get your heart rate up faster. Doesnt that help you burn fat.

    Its just me but I dont think I'm going to take advice from Bob on everything. Just because he's roided out and I'm not. Nothing against him but he's gong to burn fat because he's using roid's. So he can use slow cardio.

    Sorry, but without being perdantic I think running -vs- walking for the same distance burns a fair bit more calories as you have to combat air resistance alot more, granted you're running outdoors at a fair pace.

    but yeah.....! these people are about as sharp as the shockwave produced as a mach 2 flow hits a 80degree point-wedge

    slow cardio if you wish to minimise muscle loss
    HIIT if you're a chunder monkey who wants to rid the fat fast, at the expense of a little meat

    Many of you guys are completely clueless without a dictionary.

    "Perdantic" is not a word, not to be a pedant.
    Stats as of 8/16/05:
    -------------------
    Arms: 15"
    Thighs: 24"
    Calves: 15 1/2"

    That's all I've got, I'll measure the rest later.

    Sorry, but without being perdantic I think running -vs- walking for the same distance burns a fair bit more calories as you have to combat air resistance alot more, granted you're running outdoors at a fair pace.
    ..youre kidding right?

    but yeah.....! these people are about as sharp as the shockwave produced as a mach 2 flow hits a 80degree point-wedge

    aerothermodynamics

    slow cardio if you wish to minimise muscle loss
    HIIT if you're a chunder monkey who wants to rid the fat fast, at the expense of a little meat
    If a guy is muscular but cant lift worth **** he is nuthing but a cosmetic pussy ,non functional muscle size =pointless silicon implants as far as i `m concerned

    -> A-Rod

    You want big muscles, girly man? Find big rock. Pick up big rock. Raise big rock overhead. Repeat as neccesary.

    -> rent-a-lambo

    I wasnt kidding. I am not saying run coz u burn more calories, meerly stating that running the same distance will burn more.

    drag is proportional to velocity squared
