How long after my post workout shake should I eat a whole food meal??

I am 165lbs and am currently bulking and eating about 3200 cals a day.

My pre workout shake has whey + carbs (apple)
My post workout shake has whey + milk + carbs (bagel and oats)

1 hour after my post workout shake I eat a whole food meal (chicken, whole grain rice, broccoli)

Is eating a whole food meal only 1 hour after my post workout shake too soon?

The reason I ask is because the casein in the milk is pretty slow digesting so maybe I should wait longer than 1 hour. I am just SO hungry 1 hour its hard to wait!

    thanks.

no it's not, breakfast is, just like it is for everyone else.

it's the most important meal of the morning

OP it's fine, I'll eat my pwo meal anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour after I workout. If i'm only having a shake I'll eat sooner, if I'm eating a bunch of stuff and/or I have class I'll eat later.

    Whenever you get hungry.

Your body will let you know when its digested the pwo shake and is ready for another feeding.

    Its different for everyone.

Most of the time I have 3-4 hours between eating but I get hungry like 1.5 hours after my pwo shake. It digests faster because of your workout and because its liquid instead of solid food.

Hey guys i had a similiar question. My PWO meal is a little more...meatier then that. I have a sirloin burger with any fiberous veggies I have, I'm eating a similiar amount of calories too. My question is will the fat in the burger and butter on my veggies slow absorption of the pwo shake? And don't worry about hunger, I'm always hungry lol

    Post workout meal

    Hey tiny,

The burger fat is nothing but empty calories which will get stored directly to your body fat. It will only help to gain fat. Post workout meals should contain substantial amount of carbs (preferably easy digesting) and correct amount of protein.

The carbs will trigger your pancreas to secrete insulin at a rate proportional to the amount of sugars you manage to insert into your blood. Insulin will push the rate of glucose and amino acid uptake to your muscles. This will help you stay away from the post workout catabolic state, thus you avoid losing muscle.

A few EFAs may help, but no unhealthy fats please.
A walk a day keeps the fat away!!

So i can eat the sat fats later in the day? I'll just have a turkey sandwich or a tin of fat free cream cheese on a brown rice cake, or maybe some rice pudding with a glass of milk instead, but I haven't noticed much fat gain on my bulk doing this.

Ideally you'd have a post workout shake then eat a real meal with high carbs and high protein an hour later.

Sometimes I just have two PWO shakes.

    It depends.
