What is considered low intensity cardio?
I'm curious as to what most of you define low intensity cardio to be. I like to go for a run in the morning, for 3-4 miles at a very slow pace- probably 8 minutes per mile. I ask this because I'm wondering if I'm negatively affecting my ability to gain muscle, or if I'm ok with this level of intensity in terms of cardio.
Just looking for some thoughts here as to what exactly "low intensity" means.

In my opinoin low intensity cardio is burning fat ONLY. Heres an example. I'm 180lbs at about 5'11". In order to hit fat burning only I need to be at 128-136 beats per minute. Your burning fat but not tiring your muscles. I think that would be low intensity. Usually that's a 4mph walk for 45 minutes. I hope this helps

8 minutes per mile is "very slow"? Holy Jesus. I must be crippled.
That's 7.5 miles per hour and for most (almost all) people is above low intensity.

HAHA no kidding - me too!!!
Get a heart rate monitor. You will be shocked that what you THINK you're doing is not what you're doing at all in terms of intensity.

for me, low intensity=
stationary bike, low setting, moderate pace (80-85rpm)
walking 2.5-3.5mph
this keeps my HR ~110-125

OP is thinking like a runner. Eight minute miles are slow for hardcore runners, but fast for everyone else.

thx folks, I was about to make a thread like this. I've been keeping my heart rate around 120-130 for cardio. So I'm guessing 120-135 range is good for low intensity. Thx. This ended up being a really helpful thread.

so 220 - your age - your RHR x.65-.8 = LI cardio? Seems very elaborate..

don't forget to add your rhr back in....and yes it is elaborate.
but unfortunately, it STILL is not 100% accurate.... give 5-10 bts/min either way.
