I figured since Dark, Hamakayna, Fredo and myself are starting Keto Diets within the past few days, we could all compare notes and encourage each other. Any new Keto Diet starters are welcome..please

ketostix
This is day three for me. I finally got my ketostix to change color! woo hoo. Never thought I would actually be excited about peeing on a piece of paper
It's just that I've heard some people say how hard its been to get into Ketosis. One thing is for certain, this is the longest my body has been deprived of carb in my entire life.
Stay strong fellas and resist those cravings!
Oh, the stick was measuring 15 mg/dl (or the second to the trace color). When you are in full blow Keto, does the color get completely dark?*See the fire sweepin' out our very street today. I STARTED THE KETO DIET MONDAY, IT IS NOW THURSDAY AND THE KETOSTIX HAS ONLY SHOWN TRACE ALL WEEK. IN THE PAST, THE ONLY TIME THOSE STIX TURNED REALLY DARK IS AFTER A LONG EVENING WORKOUT AND VERY LITTLE FOOD ALL DAY. MY PROTEIN SHAKE HAS SOME CARBS IN IT, BUT THIS WEEK MY MAIN BATTLE IS TRYING TO STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM THE PEANUT BUTTER JAR.

Hey Kill
Do you have any other symptoms such as bad breath and smelly urine?
I don't have ketostix so I have no idea if I'm in ketosis. As I said yesterday the only thing I really felt was being pretty tired...Feel good today though...well so far.
-Dark
Why don't you go to the drug store and pick up some ketostix?
Sorry to hear that you're feeling tired. I've been taking Hydroxycut and it's got me completely wired. I can't sit down for more that a few min. LOL*See the fire sweepin' out our very street today. i understand that trace is all you need to show for it to be working. The darkness of the color on the strip is dependent on water intake as well, as the more water you drink, the more diluted the ketones in your urine will be. So as long as you get trace, i wouldnt worry too much about trying get deeper, as i have seen nothing to show that deeper ketosis is a sign of losing bodyfat faster.
hmm, that is interesting that it would be darker after a workout...i have always found that the stix show negative, or almost negative after i workout. I understand this is because the ketones in the bloodstream are used somehow during your workoutLast edited by PopeG400; 07-25-2002 at 09:24 AM.

A week and a half, only have one ketostick and I'm afraid to use it. I think I'm in ketosis.
bodyweight: 196 kcal: 1900-2000 carbs: 50-60
This is my 3rd time on a keto diet so the symptoms of brain fog and fatique dont bother me.
I was 205 on monday, I checked the scale 2 days later 200 and yesterday I was 196. I'm losing weight fast but I'm eating protein per bodyweight. So it's probably fat.
I love this diet it's easy...Eternal Creatures are not so prudent.

FWIW...
As mentioned previously on another thread I have done keto several times for weight loss only, two for serious weight loss -- no workout the first time 25 years ago but began workout 3 months into the second two years ago.
I'm 54 and weighed 330 March of 2000, down to 245 Sept of 2000 and 215 Feb 2001 where I backed off and stayed until slowly working up to 225 while adding LBM. Current BF 28%. Goal is down to 200 and then off the get another 20 lbs of excess skin removed. I'd be happy with 12% BF after my life history. :-(
I started my keto diet night before last... no carbs at all until late last night when I broke down and had a glass of red wine (not advisable). However, the classic morning 'runs' appeared right on schedule as always happens for me -- my body sheds water right off the bat. No breath or urine odor yet.
After my first keto diet I don't use the stix -- breath and urine odor is a dead give away for me as is the 'runs' which abate after a week or so. When I used the stix in the past they turned dark purple on a strict 'almost no' carb diet. This extreme diet can't support workout IMO -- just too extreme, no energy or strength at all, poor post workout recovery for sure. However, it is the only way I know to get into ketosis quickly and definitely.
My plan (for now) is three days (off days) of NO carbs then after confirming keto onset loading up 50 grams of carbs pre and post workout with megadoses of ALA to see if it really works to sustain the keto while the carbs support a reasonable workout regimen. I'll make adjustments from there as I see how things go.

GREAT IDEA
Great Idea killshot........
This is day four to me! here are my stats.
180 lbs.
about 20% fat
Cal:1800
Prt:180 g
Fat:98 g
Carb: 50g
Since I can't see any change in my urine and in my breath I'm keeping my carbs as low as 30 to see if it changes something. Is the funny "metallic" dry taste in the mouth a sign of ketosis?
....by the way I'm lightheaded but not feeling so tired.
Also, I have arranged my workout so it is shorter each day, because I'm getting really tired...

My stats are very similar to yours hamakayna
183 lbs.
about 20% BF
Cals: 1830
Protein: 183g
Fat: 114g
Carb: 20g (actually been around 30)
Today is also my fourth day. I don't have any symptoms though except light headedness and tiredness. Coffee helps in the morning but in the afternoon I'm stuck. I might go on Kill Shot's suggestion and ketostix just to check if I'm in ketosis or not.
Also when I lifted on Tuesday I was noticeably weaker and had less endurance in my lifts. I'm not too concerned about my strength because it should come back some, but I have also shortened my workouts somewhat.
I haven't weight myself since Tuesday (down to 181), I'll check today or tomorrow and see where I am at.

I'm curious about ALA. Do a lot of people who workout and do a Keto diet use it? What does it do? Have you used it before? Did it help you? -curious george j/k*See the fire sweepin' out our very street today. Burns like a red coal carpet, baby, mad bull lost its way. Gimme, gimme shelter or I'm gonna fade away* -Stones

I whizzed before I started working out, so any urine deposited in my bladder after my workout began would have been keytone -free because it was being used as a fuel at the time? Is this how it works? Seems logical enough.
I'm still nervous about taking that damn creatine with the 30 carbs of sugar transport after my workout. Keep worrying about it knocking me out of Keto.*See the fire sweepin' out our very street today. Burns like a red coal carpet, baby, mad bull lost its way. I have a question, I've been doing keto for like 1 week and half + I've lost 8 pounds so far... but I don't look like it very much like I don't look that much leaner, why?
My measurements are smaller but they haven't gotten smaller since I've been dong keto.Eternal Creatures are not so prudent.

i'm on my second official week into keto and it's going pretty well. The first time i did it,it was a flop and i was low on energy and felt dizzy all the time. Now everything's going fine,energy-wise,i'm pretty high on energy.Yesterday i had the darkest colour in my keto-diastix,and i was really excited. It turned colour the moment my urine hit the paper.Anyway,i'm also using Lipoderm-y and it's working great.I don't know if at my bf percentage,i should be using it or not but economically-wise,i really don't care. It's working fine, may not be the max but it's working fine.

You're more likely to get a darker color on the sticks post-workout and first thing in the morning because you're more likely to be slightly dehydrated at those times. Same number of ketones being exceted + less fluid = higher concentration of ketones.
I say drink more water and forget about getting to purple.

Only day 4 for me...but playing basketball today I felt real real low on energy. Hopefully when I lift tomorrow I'll feel a lil better with some carbs in me. I've felt sluggish since yesterday so things haven't been too bad. I hope my energy increases some next week, otherwise I'll be getting an ECA just to have some energy.
It hasn't been too hard so far. Only pain in the ass to me is always cooking food. Other than that not too bad at all, surpirsingly.
I'll prolly get some ketostix just to make sure im in ketosis over the weekend.
BTW way great job Older. Takes a lot of discipline to keep at it for so long, but when you see results I guess it helps keep ya motivated.
Dyno it could be water weight and not as noticeable. Not sure though, i'm no expert on weight loss

Just checking in before I crash. I hit all my numbers today. Worked out. Discovered I'm a dumbass for supplementing whey protein for my daily protein intake instead of some slow burning stuff that no one seems to want to tell me, I guess I'll go ask the old lady at GNC. LOL.

Started Keto Monday last week. I got into Ketosis by Weds last week. I don't have my ratios with me because they are on my home computer. I had a very strict diet last week until Friday night. I had a spinach and cheese pizza, two Coke Cola's, and some baby back ribs on Saturday. I got back in the swing completely by Monday. I didn't get back into Ketosis till Thursday. During these couple of weeks, I haven't experience dizziness, heachaches, loss of energy, gain of energy, or a strong smell from urine. Maybe I am doing something wrong. According to the scale, I lost five pounds. But that is probably water weight.
Sun - Cardio
Mon - Legs
Tues - Biceps, Triceps, Chest and Abs
Weds - Cardio
Thurs - Shoulders and Back
Friday - Cardio
Saturday - All of the above
When I see myself with my clothes off, I don't see a difference. But when I see myself in certain clothes, I can notice a small difference.
