Best Armed Service Branch for Physique?
Now that high school is coming to an end, I have been thinking about joining the US military to help pay for college. Does anyone know which branch (army, navy, marines, air force) would be the best for keeping/getting in shape?
Thanks alot,
Josh

It doesn't matter the service man. You have the same opprotunitys to lift in each one as long as you do it on your own. I was in the Marines and there were plenty of guys that joined thinking it would make them ripped and in shape or something but they never went to the gym or did anything. Then again there were guys in the Air Force and Navy that were on our base and they had desk jobs but they were pretty big because they worked out on their own time. Bottom line...it has to do with the individual, not the branch.

This is true, but it also depends on your mos (job). If you are a grunt you will stay in decent shape.

Army my ass, come on the Rangers I agree with, but a basic infantryman in the Army can't hold a Marines jockstrap.

did i say anything about infantry? did i say anything about whos better i think u have lost track of whats important...they are on the same team we all fight for the same reason one branch is not called more because they are more hardcore...or because one branch cant hold anothers jockstrap....basic question was which one could keep him with a better physique...obviously any special forces could because they are so physically demanding and u constantly exercise and have to stay in shape...so along with the comment that an army infantry man cant hold your jockstrap....grow up...(shakes head) kids these days

Nevermind the question. If you want to stay in shape, you'll stay in shape in any branch or get fat in any branch like someone else said. If you choose a branch of the Armed Forces based on how you'll look, you'll probably be in hell for the next four years. Why don't you do some research and see what the different services have to offer, then join the damn Marines?

to me looks is the last thing u should be thinking about...think of it this way what could u do in a branch that after ur 4-6 years or more could do take out and benefit from...pick an mos that u could be succesful in....such as air traffic controller...maybe go to school and then get in and become a officer...think of ur future not ur body

well like like 3-4 time a week you in the army you have to wake up a 6 and run 5 mile timed and once a month run 3 mile with a sack fully loaded with rocks timed that **** get hard plus doin those damn calisthenics in the god damn sonow and rain with pisses me of and is very demanding.

Don't join a branch based on how you're going to LOOK, for cripe's sake.
You'll hate your life for 3-4 years if you're picking a job on such a superficial basis. Unless you definitely get infantry, if being fit is your main goal, I'd say go join the Marines. They're the craziest of all the branches in terms of PT -- I've met very very few fat marines, especially out here.
Army guys though run the gambit, even in combat arms. Armor guys tend to be on the chubby side, same with field artillery. Aviation (for some reason), Cav and Infantry guys are usually in the best shape, but my unit is Mech so there are a lot of fatasses running around even in those specialties.
And if you get Combat Service or Service Support...(transportation, medical service, quartermaster or god forbid, chemical) you'll be depending on your own motivation to get your ass to the gym. I'm in a chemical company and our average PT score is pretty pathetic -- something like a 230. I spank most of my platoon on the run, and I'm female.
Bottom line -- if you go to a lightfighter unit in the Army like the 82nd or the 101st, even if you're not infantry you'll probably end up being in pretty good shape because those units put a large emphasis on being rocks. If you end up in a mechanized unit like mine (3ID) you'll have to have your own internal motivation to get yourself ripped.
just my 2 cents,
Sunny
PS -- you'll probably lose weight being deployed though. it's hot and there's nothing else to do except go to the gym. especially when you're female and they won't let you go off the FOB because "it's dangerous out there, little lady, you go file some paperwork now". *rolls eyes*

i only said 101st because thats what i currently do, and the marines are not the crziest with pt...go into sear in the air force now they are crazy...they are the people that train marines...army and navy for survival training and they constantly get their asses beat....my brother is a marine and said pt is a joke...even in basic it isnt hard its just emtionally hard...thats it

I was referring to basic branches, not the special stuff.
Your run of the mill marine is probably more of a PT-stud than your average army guy. Unless of course said Army guy is a Ranger, in which case...*shrug*
This is just my experience.

Maybe in his unit PT is a "joke," but come PT with mine sometime and see how hard you're laughing at the end. What's his MOS?

For us Aussies, Australian Special Forces or Air Force (Special Air Service Regiment) SASR
our SF training is...
60 pushups
100 situps
15 KM (30 something mile march with 30kg pack)
10 pullups
8 KM run @ 7km per 6:30 minutes (should be able to complete it within 30 something minutes
Complete a run and dodge ball course
swim in a disruptive pattern for 1.2 KM in full uniform
after you get in you go on to more advanced things like parachuting special weapons and so forth.
Training takes 3 days to complete
I took the SF training course and I failed thinking yeah that's easy (big ego) at the time, I failed badly (passed the academic side of it but the fitness was to much) but i got into the army reserves no problems
One day ill resit the SF testing
EDIT: btw, the aussie SF is probably close to the marines in training and preparation

Man, Josh37, you sure stirred up a hornet's nest. I too was and always will be a Marine. I've been on other bases and the regular army, navy, and air force's PT regimen doesn't hold a candle to the Corps! However special operations units are completely different but the Marines have got an answer to that as well, called FORCE RECON. Anyway, like several have already mentioned you can get in good shape in any branch if you work at it. As far as your future is concerned, just be sure you choose a branch and an MOS that will provide you with a good skill when you get out in the real world. Good luck!

I say the Army, for a few reasons:
#1. The quality of your physique is 100% dependent on the effort you put in to acheive your goal.
#2. Only the Marines have a more rigorous PT standard than the Army--which isn't very high at all--has for its soldiers. However; most is cardio and endurance and is not ideal for a larger build. If you want to have a smaller, fit type of build, the Marines is good and you cans top reading.
#3. Because the Army doesn't have a very hard PT program at all, you won't be straining yourself to workout in the afternoons.
#4. Tape Tests in the Army are EASY to pass.

Hey AA, don't give the boy ideas.
You should be GETTING taped, unless you're female. And for guys, you can have trouble passing the tape test if you have a small neck -- all they measure is your waist & your neck circumference...if you've got a gut & your neck is puny, you're going to come up as a fatbody.

ya you must be able to pass a pt test to get in usually...but they need people these days especially the 101st...that is if you can make it through ranger school....airborne...and air assault...other branches are the same as well...only if u can make it through...i remember when i first got to boot camp i could barely do like 30 some push ups in 2 minutes...now i can do 89 in a minute and 94 sit ups and run 3 miles in 13:30 and 28 pull ups...but this isnt because of training its because of all the stuff i do besides our pt...it doesnt matter what branch really...just deoends on ur individual motivation

i would say marines, because from what my father and uncle are telling me it is killer, nothing could hold a candle to the marines boot camp and ITR
I cant wait to join the marines, two more years of H.S. and i can sign up

Well, here in San Diego, I'd have to say the best built, best looking men are in the Marines, but the sailors seem smarter. No Army or Air Force here to speak of.

Like someone else mentioned...what about the Navy Seals?

Man, if your gonna join the military just to get your college paid for forget the Navy, Marines and Army. The Air Force is the most normal life. Its a 8 hour a day job. If you wanna go to war and kill then join the Army and Marines but most of them transfer in an out of Iraq all the time. The Navy is good but they spend a lot of time away. I have been in the Air Force coming up on 8 years. If you want some serious answers PM ill be more then happy to tell you about the Air Force

Also every one keeps talking about special forces every branch has it special forces marine force recon, scout snipers, navy seals, and army rangers the only thing that gets you into the special forces is that you on get picked and two don’t mind the pain of the PT and you strive for excellence
-
BoDyBuIlDeR AT LaRgE
no honestly u dont get picked...example...air force has pararescue...combat control...and sear...u can get into these for ur mos if u dont meet requirements u get booted out of that and into a different career field most likely SP's...rangers...its the same u dont make it through ur out and u go back to doing what u were doing...navy seals is the same way...i only know this because a freind of mine is in combat control...im in the rangers and my uncle was in the seals
also for most of these u have to pass a PT test first, so if u fail at that u wont even get to get into training
