Is it typically normal to do less weight total (both arms) using dumbells than with a barbell when doing bench presses?

I believe so. It takes more to balance each weight, and if one side is weaker than the other you'll notice with dumbells. Whereas when you are using a barbell your otherside compensates for the weakness of the other. And you can add twists to the dumbell press that makes it involve more muscles, making it harder.

Of course, you have to stablize each are indivually and thus cannot used the union of both to help yourself. I workout with about 60lbs dumbells, and bench about 205, completely normalI rape back.
If you were half as good as me you'd be close to perfection.
