    500 Pushups/Day...good or bad?

    Well, coming from a military background, I do alot of pushups along with my usual weight lifting schedule.

    I do just about 500 pushups a day, with a skipped day here and there.

    I have just started doing this for a couple days, should I see some serious results.

    As far as over training, I dont think thats going to be a problem.

    depending on what day it is, you will be hitting sore muscles - shortcoming your possible gains. I wouldnt do it if i were you.

    your endurance, but thats about it.

    you will see small gains in arm size in the first few weeks or months if you are lucky, but otherwise, minimal gains. It can only hurt your gains with bodybuilding.

    who the hell does train smart think he is...bench 160 and your trying to give another kid addvice here is my advice i think 500 pushups is far too much 4 sets of 25-30 should be a resonable amount and don't do it everyday do it on a chest day with triceps

    here is my advice i think 500 pushups is far too much 4 sets of 25-30 should be a resonable amount and don't do it everyday do it on a chest day with triceps

    Low-weight, high-rep exercises (such as your pushups) build endurance.

    High-weight, low-rep exercises (traditional weightlifting) build size.

    if you can do 500, then you're not tearing any fibers down. Thats how muscle grows. Try some on an incline and get that full chest workout.

    500 is overkill.

    Like everyone else said,doing them wont build muscle too much but will increase endurance.

    Ok, well to be honest it's kind of a disspointment to me. I enjoy pushups alot.

    I usually do about 50-60 at a time, but after a couple sets haha that number drops a bit.

    But if its really going to hurt me, ill cut down.

    a person is born with a certain number of each type of muscle fibre, you can't make more of one type, they only get bigger (in terms of type 2a and b). its only rare cases in humans that muscle fibres split and multiple, some animals can do it but most humans don't!. yes though, slow twith fibres are type 1 fibres and they are most sutable to endurance, they do not fatigue as quick/not at all.

    Doing pushups will not hurt your gains but you wont grow either. You will train your slow twitch muscles more and will become good at doing them. I ride my bike 150+ miles a day and work out and my legs are bigger than the rest of my body.

    since when did one's knowledge of the bodybuilding world correspond directly to their strength? i can't lift that much either but i'd consider myself pretty damned educated on the subject of bodybuilding thanks to spending hours researching on this and other websites and a plethora of books. don't assume that because somebody can't bench press 3,000 pounds they're ignorant...it's not knowing the information that will make you stronger, it's APPLYING IT. how else do you expect to get stronger over time?

    ...anyway, to the original poster, if you're starting a new resistance-training program to build your chest i would strongly recommend cutting back on the pushups. perhaps you could do them on the day you train your chest/triceps but the muscles need repair afterwards if you want to see growth. however if all you're doing is the 500 pushups a day, i don't see anything wrong with it. if you can do them with relative ease then it should give you nice tone and keep you at the level you're at now--but you'll see minimal gains.

    500 pushups and 150+ miles with Marine military background eh... sounds like something your typical 12 year old nerd would say. Let's see some stat pics or maybe some of your rank and squadron information. Which base would you be out of? Even if your 18-19 I still call b/s on this one.

    Actually about 9-11 hrs a week (I do have a computer mounted to my bike).

    I just realized I said 150 a day I thought I said 150 a week.

    150 miles, that's 240 kilometers.

    If he's using an expensive racing bike, and has powerful legs, 240 kilometers per day is attainable. I use a heavy mountain bike (approximately 50 pounds) and I have biked upwards of 140 kilometers a day at a speed of approximately 20 kilometers an hour.

    And in case you're wondering why I'd use a mountain bike for long-distance biking, it's because I'm poor.
