What is the best diet for older women?

My mom wants to diet. Wondering if anyone knows the best way for her to go. She is in her 50s.

    Please post suggestions

    Thanks!

Maybe a moderate protein, low fat diet to start with. But your best bet would for your mom to get checkup from her doctor first. At that age, dieting must be watched carefully. Our deiting tips here maybe fine for a 20 year old, but many factors come into play at your moms age. If she doesn't stick to it, the weight lost will come back double.

I agree with everything 97lt1 said.

Let me also add......Diets do not work. Change of lifestyles do.

I would advise your mom to (of course see a doctor first) make small changes(dedicated) to her lifestyle not trying to change to much to quickly. These small changes will add up quickly and results will come for here. IMHO As long as the doctor deems it ok for here, have her get moving (walking, running, taking the stairs, ect.). Many women in the 40-60 year range have had great results on ketonic type diets. But remember it needs to be a lifestyle change otherwise, the yo-yo effect can occur, which may actually hurt her overall health. Being healthy and fit is not just a result of very little work. It is a way of approaching life that requires "Education and Dedication", and it can be a constant struggle for many. But, It is worth it.

Give mom our best. We wish her and you well. There are a ton of knowledgable people on this any other boards that can help.

    PEACE

    Hey guys thanks

    I appreciate it.
The thing is... my mom is a little powerhouse. She does the gym a ton and can exercise with the best of them. She looks 40... so its more like... what is an effective program for her to go on to lose some weight... I was just wondering if there was any formula type diet she should do... she definitely will start with moderation. and I agree... it should be a lifestyle change.

    Thanks a lot again

    appreciate everything.

Oh. Well then that changes evrything. A high protein, moderate carb diet would be a good start for your mom. Is she taking any sups right now?

she generally likes to stay all natural with everything. She does have protein shakes.

SHe tried counting calories, but she said she gained weight on it... she only had her body weight x 10
but she said it was making her fat.

Hard to believe especially if she trains already.
She would have to have an extreamly slow motabolism for that to happen IMHO (gaining fat on 10x bodyweight for cals). Maybe she should have a blood test from her doctor and ask her doctor to check thyroid function.

The other thing is people many times take in far more calories than they think they do. PORTION CONTROL is Critical.

Does she do any cardio ? She may want to start.

I am told that older women have a lot slower metabolism...
Also... she does cardio, but doesnt like to run or anything. She does the eliptical and sometimes stairmaster...

I will tell her to check her thyroid out but I highly diet.

This is the main point of my question though... do older women have to have even less calories because their metabolism slows down. I have read before that when you get older you have to eat less...

    Thanks

Yes, If her motabolism has slowed then she is burning less cals, thus she needs less cals for maintenance.
