I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Obviously building a base on deadlifts at the beginning can be helpful. But during the intermediate stage and after, what can deadlifts really help you with other than in circumstances where you specifically want to target the hamstrings and glutes? It seems those are targetted ENOUGH with squats and such. So maybe for a bodybuilder split leg day what is important is a squat variation, unilateral quad variation, maybe a machine of any kind, and a calf exercise.
What do yall think?

Let's be honest, how effective are deadlifts from a bodybuilding perspective?

I understand doing them for lower back and hamstrings, trust me. But I just cant see them as a fundamental bodybuilding exercise like squat or bench press or barbell curl, things that should always be somewhere in a program to develop those muscles to their fullest. While something like deadlifts if done all the time can build maybe too much mass in the glutes and hamstrings, energy that could have been put to adding that mass to the chest and quads.

This is why you do deads. It's also an example of what a powerlifter looks like when he cuts.

Deadlifts are brutally hard. Everyone I've ever worked out with has looked for every excuse not to do them. I get that scence here.
When Arnold was asked why he was bigger than the other bodybuilders. He said both Franco (Columbu) and himself started out as powerlifters. It's easy to sculpt your muscles when you have alot of muscle to sculpt.
Read some Ronnie Coleman articles, he implements many powerlifting exercises into his routine including deadlifts. Are you going to argue with a guy like that?

deadlifts not only target your glutes ahd hamstrings, it hits your back pretty well as well and will help develop a thick back as stated. That's probably where you're misleaded. Deadlift targets the most on lower back/hip than glute/hamstring.
You categorized barbell curl as the same tier as benching and squats?!?!
...
anyway, energy isn't going to build muscle mass. it's what you eat. energy is well, just a form of heat.
why are you so against deadlift anyway? Is it because it's too hard and energy consuming that you can't handle it
jay cutler is also genetically gifted and juiced? I would assume that.
truly inspirational.

WTF, deadlifts are not a ham/glute exercise that are going to make your butt too big. They're a back exercise more than anything. And why would it be a bad thing to build up your glutes/hams anyway? Too many idiotic statements here. My head is exploding.

Oh my. Well this changes everything. Do you realize what we must do? We must stop doing our butt-bloating deadlifts in favor of more body-neutral exercises like rack pulls! Just pop that bar up until you're past the butt-building point and jack off rack pull rep after rep until you've got a dozen horny hot ass girls itching to get at your little butt self.

Deadlifts ARE the most basic fundamental back exercise with heavy quad involvement as well. Low back, upper back, traps, hips, glutes, biceps, core/abs, forearms to grip the bar and a great substitute in you can't squat.
This is the POWERLIFTING/STRONGMAN forum not bodybuilding. That's 3 doors up.Last edited by CYLON RAIDER; 09-01-2007 at 03:43 PM.
