How much Protien can the body handle at once?

Anyone have any insight on how much protien(whey) the body can motabolize/digest without wasting any? (i.e. is there a limit for x amount of hours the body can work with?) Also, is there anything that can be done to make the body metabolize more protien?

    Thanks.

For those of you eating 100-150 grams of protein a day in the poll... lol, good luck.

edit: was that asking how much do we use in the form of a powder? If so...then my vote would be different. I consume roughly 400g/day and about 120 grams on the average day comes from powder.

from a nutritional standpoint, no one UNLESS taking aas... really needs 250-300g protien....... NO ONE. i know the site 'says you do' but the supplement companies put that out there to sell more protein.

    your body can handle about 600-700 cals. at one time. 1g carb=4cals 1g protein=4cals 1g fats= 9 cals.

i didnt read the links or anyones posts so maybe this has already been covered.but the amount of protein ones body can use or process depends on
body weight metabolism macronutrient ratio and weather or not you have just trained and probably a lot of other factors.

again this varies on body weight for me at 150 pounds a 600-700 calorie meal is gonna feel like a ton of bricks in my stomach.where as a 300 cal meal is just about perfect.

Well... All I can say is good luck with it. One day if you stick with it long enough, you'll find out what almost every single large bodybuilder has found out... That is that you need 1.5-2g of protein per lb of bodyweight. Even as far back as Arnold's days and absurd training(read his book) he ate 400-500g protein every day according to the diets in his book. I don't know your goals(andI'm assuming by your post that your natural), but, as a natural, if you ever wanna be over 210 and lean(assuming you're about 5'10) then you'll have to figure this out, too. More protein and more intensity in the gym/less volume I think are ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to maximizing growth.

I don't know where you guys come up with this stuff, man honestly. I do NOT feel like getting into this again... but, THERE IS NO SET IN STONE CALORIC OR PROTEIN REQUIREMENT. The variables are too great... ie, metabolism, age, bodyweight, LEAN bodyweight, activity level of the stomach, blood type( again... debateable), digestive enzymes or no?, and the list could literally go on for days. This is the all time UNANSWERABLE QUESTION, and I really just don't like people throwing stuff out there that simply isn't true.

For the love of all that is holy...this is a ****ing bodybuilding board.

We aren't talking about bare minimums here. We're talking about the OPTIMAL CONDITIONS FOR MUSCLE GROWTH AND MAXIMIZING IT ! !We intake a daily SURPLUS of calories, protein, etc.. in order to BUILD MUSCLE. We waste alot of $$$ every day by eating more than we "need".

What is so hard to understand about that ?

More protein and more intensity in the gym/less volume I think are ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to maximizing growth.

lmano you've NEVER TRIED not eating that much protein. i eat aobut 1g per lb... 2g is ridiculous. people on her e accept it without any knowledge of nutrition's effects on the body. read studies, read studies, read books. results have beeen proven..past about 1.2g....without as that is just ridiculous. i know i'm in hot water saying this on THIS board. 1 gram per pound of bodyweight minimum.

From what I have heard, a good rule of thumb is to eat 1 gram per pound of bodyweight for WHAT YOU WANT TO WEIGH.

In other words, I am 200-205 now, and my goal for the year is 215 lbs, there fore I need a minimum of 215 grams per day.

If you weigh 200lbs or so an are taking 300 grams per day, you are wasting your money, UNLESS you are dieting.

Taking mass amounts of protein is only a means to keep calorie counts low when you are dieting to be full instead of eating carbs.

I eat about 60 grams per day from Powder, and then at least 2 Chicken breasts per day (50-60 grams) and always 2 lean hamburgers after I work out ( 40-50 grams) and I eat 2-3 Peanut butter and Jelly sandwiches for Breakfast every day ( about 25-30 grams).

So basically I make sure I eat about 180-200 grams per day in meals and shakes.....then my other 20-30 grams is in the form of snacks.

Just make sure you space your consumption out, because the average person can only digest about 60 grams at the most for one sitting.

And after everything that was said in this thread about variables... you saying that just kills me... unbelieveable. Before I go on and leave this thread behind... could you please tell me what the average bodybuilder is? Somewhere in the range of an endo/ecto/meso between 115 and 250 lb, he or she is probably between the ages of 12 and 50 I guess, and he or she will either have digestive problems or won't. Is that a pretty accurate description of the average person?

The question is not necessarily how much total protein we take in but how much protein our bodies will utilize before it starts turning it into expensive poop. You can eat 1000grams, but your body will only use a fraction of that.

Well, that is true, but since ingesting lots of protein keeps the body in a net anabolic state it DOESN'T MATTER!

I have a different nutrient ratio than most people, 40/40/20 P/F/C, that means that my protein intake is very high even though my calorie consumption isn't.

How many grams or what macro-ratio would you guys recommend for a 6'4" 300+ lb Strongman? I've been training for 10 years and eat a LOT of food regularly. If you need any more info before making a recommendation please feel free to ask.
    thanks in advance.

The 40/40/20 ratio is working well for me, a 250lbs powerbuilder, i'd up the carbs a bit for strenght though (i usually don't since my goal is more lean-mass oriented), probably 30-30-40 for a strongman, i keep my protein intake steadily around 500-600g, you should up that ratio by weight and adjust your intake to the 30-30-40 ratio.

However, it depends on how you work out, seriously, i have no idea how a strongman works out so i used a powerlifters ratio.
