Weighted Vest = bad on knees?

My coach has told me that running with a weighted vest is bad on ur knees, bad Joe McKnight, the number 1 high school prospect in some magazines that is going to USC, wore one and ran every day. Isn't this a decent way to get faster?

Ask him for proof. I do not belive that wearing a weighted vest would be bad for your knees. Most vests are only a few kilos (e.g. 10 kgs). That's only a fraction of your body weight.

Every strength and conditioning coach i had in college made us wear those. It will exhaust your legs but that's because it is pushing more weight and your legs are working. But that's what general excercise does. If he thinks that weight vests are bad for you than ask what he thinks about squats or smashing into 200 pound lineman.

It is bad for your knees... but so is football. And running in general, really.

Take care of your knees otherwise, and you should be ok with the weight vest.

I agree with most of the posts. They may hurt your knees if you throw the 40 lbs in right away (or whatever yours goes up to, mine is just 40). Most vests are adjustable, start around 5-10 lbs and then work your way up.

I have my athletes start their vest training with a vest carrying approx. 8-10% of their bodyweight.

JHawk, you have any insight on how to deal with knee tendinitis? I deal with it on a regular basis and have to use a patella wrap and take anti-inflams
when i play football or do anything physical.

    Don't think so.

But I have heard before that ankle weights are bad for your knees.

i believe that the ankle wieghts are becuase for every step it is pulling your knee joint apart slightly but weight on top pushing down should be fine in low amounts for a vest.

I guess wearing a vest and running is like becoming fat all of the sudden and having to deal with the new weight. That's why heavier people tend to have knee problems. I was talking to a trainer and he said that weighted vests are fine as long as you start low and you don't feel any pain around ur knees or shins.
