Last thing I want is some kind of injury because I wasn't wearing the right type of shoes. Right now I'm wearing some cross trainers that have a decentish heel. I'd like to buy a new pair. What should I buy?

Buy boxing shoes and wear them when you weight lift.

Well I sometimes lift in chucks but your not going to want to box in them.
Maybe something like
If your boxing have your trainer tell you which shoes he wants you in and then just wear them when you lift.

what about squatting without shoes? the chuck tylors could be a good alternative?

Squatting with no shoes is best. You can't get a more natural squat than that.
Otherwise if you're in a commercial gym, what you want is Apache style moccasins.

Get rid of the cheap crepe soles inside, or wait until they inevitably fall apart. Get 4 strips of 5x14" latigo, spend a few hours crushing and folding them with your hands to soften the leather, then cut to the right size.
