preventing muscle loss + reps
i have an injury and wont be able to lift for 6-8 weeks.
ive looked into ways i can maintain muscle while not training and i have a question fo you.
- glutamine ) Promotes muscle growth and decreases muscle catabolism.
if i take glutamine daily while im recovering will it help keep my muscle or it wont have any effect because im not training?
thnks reps fr any1 who helps

I don't think it's going to help that much. A maintenance amount of protein is about all you can do supplements wise.

Dude I am in the same situation at the moment trying all i can to retain the muscle while recovering from an injury. I have been trying zma, flaxeed oil, glutamine (well there is a good amount on the shakes)..but Its very hard to maintain while being away from the gym,at least from my experience..I know i can retain a bit more by bulking meaning taking more calories but I wanted to slowly add the weight, since I busted my ass these past few months getting leaner for the summer...

Diet first then supplements. I would eat clean, but a lot of calories. As far as supplements protein shakes, BCCA's, Glutamine, and maybe some form of creatine. I know it sucks not being able to lift, but when you do come back you'll be rested and ready to go!

Whats the nature of your injury? Depending on what it is, you may want to explore alternate forms of excercising as opposed to just relying on what supplements to ingest.

Im not sure how mobile you are or where you are in your recovery but assuming you are up to it, and with greatest care you can still do seated weight resistance... maybe leg extensions, some bicep/tricep work.
Just be very careful and have a workout buddy if needed.
Good luck with your recovery bro

Glutamine is the most abundant AA our bodies, however when we train weights sometimes we can use more AA's then we can produce, this can lead to catabolism. Hence if your not training it won't have much affect.

imagine you were 6 meals with 200 gr of chicken breast (carbs aside)
now you can eat 5 meals with 150gr, if your activity is barely 0, thats enough for maintain

Its wierd its a pain above my upper chest that leads to my neck then travel behind my traps. Its like a tease it hurts for a bit then goes away for awhile and just when you think your **** went away Bammm there it is. I went to the doctor and she said it looks like you might of been lifting heavy. Wow I would of never figured that one out on my own(lol), maybe I should become a doctor. I hurt it around the begining of last month. It hurt and I still lifted for a few weeks. I hurt it again and have been away for about 3 weeks. In terms of the muscle the problem is that I was following a detailed program before I got hurt on my workout days I would eat more than I would on my off days. Now, I am not a hardgainer and I dont burn much calories on my job so I dont need to be consuming that much calories. So when I got hurt I was not eating enough calories because I was not lifting and that got me smaller. Also when you are not lifting you dont have that pumped feeling in you body and end up looking smaller and your confidence drops at least for me. Now I am taking the supps and eating a bit more and I am maintaining more . Some say to take creatine since it has helped many bulk up. I advise you to keep eating your food intake comes first then worry about supplements. I know it sucks men but remmember if you lose a little muscle now you will regaing much more later. So stay positive bro even if your friends tell you that you are shriking or whatever they want to say. Remember let the injury heal you dont want to hurt it again, I was away 6 months with a wrist injury at one time. Your goal is not only to lift now but to lift forever...

If you're going to do any cardio (I don't know the extent of your injury)... do High Intensity Interval Training. Your body will freak out b/c it's not just aerobic but has bouts of 'intense' sprinting so to say that will essentially tell your body to conserve any protein energy because you need your muscles to perform the HIIT exercise.
Personally... I'm scared. I doubt its a nerve injury or anything is torn because I still have complete rotation in my left shoulder/arm, but my 'rotator cuff region' (infra/supra spinatus, teres major (deep) + subscapularis) is very painful during any sort of adduction, abduction, flexion or extension. Even when I turn my head from left to right I still have pain. I'm goin to the docs on sat, but no more lifting for me for a long time. I can't do anything.
