why is milk bad before a workout?

is there any reason why a small amount of milk, like 4-8 oz., as part of your pre workout meal or shake is supposedly bad? i could see not doing it before cardio but does it matter before lifting?

It may slow th digestion process. But if you feel alright when lifting it shouldn't be a problem.

it's not bad if you drink it 1 hr before a workout. its just not good to drink it right before a workout because of the slow-digesting sugar.

As long as its skim, I'm having it pre-workout everyday.
Could they even imagine? Imagine the tears you've tasted, imagine the blood you gave, and the sweat you poured? And it was all because no one believed. All because no one cared until one day. One day when you became something. The day they stopped moving you...and you moved them. This is your life, your pain and your heart. Today is the day. Tomarrow is here.

um, well it does digest slowly, but it has 2 protein types, whey and casein, casein will slow down the rate at which you can absorb your protein shake. But im not sure if this is true for skim milk, but i think it is.

hehe i've pasted this about 3 times already!

AND, doesnt milk slow down the protein being digested along with it?

yes, but this is not at all a bad thing in the case of milk. you see, milk has substantial insulin-generating ability AND other growth factors. casein allows IGF-1 to maintain its binding capacity & structure whereas IGF-1 would normally undergo significant denaturation by the time it hits the blood. this quality tends to counterbalance & even supercede its slow absorption & processing. whey does not exert these same positive effects on IGF-1 the way casein does, nor does it have the same positive effect on nitrogen retention. there is nothing particularly special about making sure casein doesn't get in the way of whey absorption. in fact, to play devil's advocate, one might better ask why include any whey if it's gonna get in the way of casein . the answer to this is that whey contains, among other things, a significant hit of much needed BCAAs, a uniquely anabolic amino profile, and it also can synergize with milk/casein to hike insulin levels beyond either protein source by itself. chemical teamwork.

    Question

I want to start having milk in my PWO shake, but the only problem is that I bring my shaker to the gym with me, with my whey and dextrose in it, and then just fill it with water after my workout from the fountain. I can't figure out how to get the milk, and the whey/dextrose to the gym at the same time lol. My next question is this: I currently have 1.5 scoops of whey, 2 tbsp dextrose and a banana PWO, If i were to incorporate milk into my PWO which would I sub it in for?

I also bring my shake to the gym in a shaker bottle and I use milk and water for my liquid. This is what I do: I fill up a seperate bottle with 8oz of skim milk and 12oz of water. I keep this bottle in a small insulated lunch bag with an ice pack to keep it cold. Then when I am done working out I pour the bottle of milk/water into my shaker bottle, shake it, and drink up.

I've heard the reason not to have milk pre-workout is because your body is spending energy to diegest this protien during your workout. Basically you want all the energy you have to focus on lifting or cardio. However, I've never tried milk preworkout, so I don't really know how much of an effect it has on your session. Give it a try, see how you feel.

Whats the deal with everybody pushing skim milk? Whole milk is more nutritionally dense and it contains enzymes that promote fat loss which counters the added fat content. Skim milk is crap in my opinion, most of the good stuff is filtered out with the exception of some protein and carbs. People stress macronutrition and then turn around and promote skim milk, its the white bread of dairy. Here's one article I found on the subject.

Drinking Whole Milk Is A Key To Losing Weight

The Sadkhin Complex(R) Offers A Revolutionary "Weight Loss" Method And "Hunger Control" Discovery To Overweight Consumers Nationwide

BROOKLYN, NY -- (INTERNET WIRE) -- The Sadkhin Complex(R) (TSC), the nation's most successful privately-owned weight-loss management complex, recognizes the difficult task that many Americans have in maintaining a successful long-term diet program. "We have found that drinking whole milk can be a key factor in losing large amounts of weight rapidly and healthfully," says Dr. Grigory Sadkhin, President and Founder of The Sadkhin Complex(R).

"Throughout history, milk has been used for its medicinal value," Dr. Sadkhin emphasizes. "The abundance of calcium, vitamins and minerals provided by whole milk (not skim or low-fat milk) augments the weight loss process and will expedite the loss of inches (around the waist) as well. The natural milk fat is easily absorbed and digested by the body and is very beneficial to the overall weight loss process.

Recent studies support Dr. Sadkhin's claims according to The University of Vermont-Burlington, where participants who increased the amount of calcium in their diet lost more weight than those who did not. Calcium derived from milk was also found to strengthen bones, reduce bone loss during the aging process and assist in blood clotting and nerve health.

Did they ever compare skim milk to whole milk? Check the values of whole and skim. Skim actually has more calcium per serving the whole. From the snippet above it seems they are looking at calcium not just milk in general.

    http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-001-02s001x.html - whole milk

    http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-001-02s0025.html - skim milk

I will say that I have seen much better results drinking at least 3 cups of skim milk each day while loosing fat.

Whole milk has wayyyyy to much fat in it, by the time i figured this out i had a very puffy stomach. However i have heard that there is more nutritional value in whole milk, but i don't care i can't drink it to much fat.

How long can you leave milk unrefrigerated and have it be ok to drink? In other words if i want to bring a shake with milk in it to school (and not carry it with an ice pack), at what time does it become a bad idea to drink it?

It is hard to say because it depends on the temperature. Obviously if it is out in the sun then it will go bad faster then if you have it out somewhere cold.

I think it should be fine when you take it to school. I have left milk outside the fridge over night and it was fine the next day.

You could also wrap an ice pack around it and put a rubber band on or something to keep it attached, if you are worried about it going bad.

Give it a smell before you drink it and if it smells fine then usually it will be okay to drink.

I would be more worried about the taste. Luke warm milk taste nasty IMO.

    Hey Alan!

I forgot to take my shake with me to the gym one day last week, so I grabbed a litre of "Lacteze" skim milk (i.e. milk w/ added lactase enzymes) from a nearby store and chugged it instead. No, I'm not lactose intolerant - I figured that glycogen would be replenished faster than with regular milk as the lactose is already broken down into glucose and galactose.

    Sound reasonable?

Any idea how the GI/II or this stuff compares to regular skim milk?

    Thx.

Maybe that's why babies are always so ripped :P

my guess is that there would be a slightly faster rate of absorption (& hence glycogen resynthesis) since less lactase activity would be necessary, but the enzymatic action of lactase would only take fractions of a second in tolerant individuals, so the actual difference might be too small to justify the switch. same goes for insulin response. pretty cool application/concept though, sounds worth a try for a few weeks to see if any andvantage is observable. the only potential drawback is that the less intact lactose-containing foods you consume, the less tolerant of lactose you might become over the long term. we can postulate this based on the fact that an appreciable degree of lactose tolerance can actually be "forced" in intolerant individuals over time, with a gradually progressive consumption of lactose-containing foods.
