As old as this thread is, ^ I'd be guilty of putting that spoonful of PB in my mouth before it touched the oats.

oats = oat groats as they grow in nature
oatmeal = processed so it can be consumed as porridge, either by chopping them up (steel cut oats), or de-hulling, rolling, and steaming them (old fashioned rolled oats).

Yeah, I just eat uncooked oatmeal with milk. I've never particularly cared for cooked oats, unless they're with something else.

ive basically heard not to buy the pre packaged oats. but they are good for a carb because they digest slowly therefore keep you full longer.

A good way to make oats
If plain oats in your shake is too much for you guys and you don't think you can swallow it, Try doing this
Oats + Low fat milk@water - Put this in the microwave for a while and take it out. Then add pure honey( its a better option than sugar but a more expensive method).
And i think milk is a better option if you guys take it at night.

Nothing different enough about them to make a difference. Eat whichever you like/have time for. This is true even if you think the GI makes a difference. The following is by Alan Aragon.
Oats are a unique grain in that an increase in surface area (via increased refinement) doesn’t seem to alter their metabolic effects. Unlike the hike in glycemic index (GI) seen with grinding down other grains, the GI of oats is unaffected. The mechanism may be that the viscosity (gumminess) caused by the beta-glucans impedes either a) the rate it's broken down by amylase or b) the rate at which glucose and maltose diffuse toward the intestinal mucosa, or c) a combination of the previous.

See above.
I just realized I was posting in a zombie thread. Arghhhhhh!!!

I'm not a big fan of oats until I tossed them in the blender and ground them up really fine, goes amazing in a protein shake.
1 cup oats (before blending) 300 cals
1 cup low fat milk 110cals
1/2 to 1 cup water for desired consistency
1 scoop whey protains de choclate 170 cals
= heavenly breakfast at 580 cals that will keep you full and clear the pipes
Edit: That's also a pretty big serving, can easily cut in half.

I think oats are one of them things you gotta learn to love. You read so much about oats online so you go and buy some, and you are like **** YEAR OATZ, get home throw some in a bowl, pour in some water, cook them, and expect an explosion of taste and a 6 pack to grow as soon as it hits your tongue, over time you learn what you like to add to them, what makes it taste great, how long to cook/freeze em, etc. I think the best thing about them are their nutrition value + actual value, oats are cheap, and you can buy in bulk/on sale and keep them around and throw them in about anything
