Why are carbs good for post workout?

I read alan aragon's sticky thread about pre and post workout nutrition. I get the point that carbs and proteins are good for pre/post workouts, but I don't quite understand WHY.

Pre workout, yeah carbs give you the energy to work out, but after you're done why more carbs? Maybe I'm coming from a different mindset because I workout in the evening (around 5:30-7:00) and go to bed around 10.

Post- Carbs help to transport protein to your hungry muscles... WMS is best for this as it spikes insulin really fast

Don't listen to those supplement company suck-ups

    Carbohydrates Post Workout:
*Cause insulin to be released, which computes the release of cortisol (muscle eater)
    *Has protein sparing effects
    *Replenishes Glycogen stores

If you're getting a pre-workout meal/shake. Then their's not need for "rapid glycogen replenishment". Whey protein is already highly insulinogenic, so you don't really need a "insulin spike" or that many carbs for that matter.

You can try Oatmeal, Cereal, Rice, Yams, Fruit, or basically anything with carbs. Hope this helps

P.S. Casein (Dairy like Skim Milk) and Whey haven shown to out preform Whey alone for a post workout protein source.

studies have been done that a carb + protein mixture will help replenish glycogen storages and transport proteins a lot faster then just a solid protein shake PWO

also a Caesin + whey mix will also help give better benefits then just whey alone

2 facts to put into consideration

a small insulin spike PWO doesnt hurt as it helps replenish the muscles a bit quicker and utilizes the whey mroe effectively

thanks for the link, but I asked 'why' are carbs good for post workout, not 'what' carbs.
