depends what you want bro.....I've seen em as simple as sand.....and heavy duty as iron.....and super heavy duty with rubber coating and handles in the plates for easy lifting.

Are you looking for type, brand?

The best plates I've ever used at a gym in MI were the ones they use at Lifetime Fitness. (prolly the most expensive too)

Rubber coated, with 2 grip holes in each plate for easy lifting. They were awesome and didn't make any noise.

Depends on your preference.....i enjoy hearing the clang of the iron once in awhile. (music to my ears)

You can buy cheap Cap barbell stuff. It all weighs the same. It will chip faster, so get a small bottle of touch up paint.
There made in China. Don't know if Made in the USA is a concern or not. Macy makes around the same quality, but there cut in the middle so you can grip them easier.

Local fitness places will most likely carry stuff middle of the road, sometimes the more expensive brands.

Look in your local paper in the bargain hunters section. From time to time people will want to get rid of their stuff. You can get awesome deals. And again it all weighs the same.

I'll second, what chair said: I like cap too. It's cheap and it heavy, lets face it, we're not buying fine furniture. Go for the cheapest iron..$.43 a pound and you are on the right track.
