US witholds CanadianCubans' million$

A 107 year old Canadian widow, resident of Cuba for most of her life,
has her money in a US bank. The US denied her access to her
money, until the Canadian government intervened. The US now
allows her $ 96 US a month, suggesting she should live in Canada.
The Canadian consul told the US that the woman prefers Cuba and
could not withstand Canadian winters.

The widow, Mary McCarthy, says she could use more money.
What do you think should happen ?

They should take her money and laugh at her. When Canada tries to say something, we should just hang the phone up on them and laugh more.

America is still bitter. The USA used to run Cuba through the mafia and big business and a Murderous dictator who the CIA supported.That is until Castro and Che freed the people of them.Now Castro is the dictator.

Cuban American/Florida vote.

The only reason I can conjure to impose sanctions on an impoverished island nation that poses no threat whatsoever to us or the region.

I suppose we would sanction Venzeula for nationalizing US assets in the nation but, well, they have petrol, and they don't constitute a powerful voting bloc in a swing state with 27 electoral college votes.

While I think she should get her money that is exactly the treatment the Canadian government deserves.

I certainly understand US resentment at Cuba nationalizing US owned industries (though Cuba did not violate international law in doing so).

However, perhaps there should be an exemption for widows
over the age of 106.

The witholding of funds certainly makes me nervous about leaving
my money in a US bank.

I am pleased to note that I received a reply re the widow's situation,
the next day, from my Conservative MP. Hopefully some one will
look into this after the cabinet shuffle. Maybe some of you want to contact
your representatives too ?

Canada certainly has a history of abandoning its' citizens. Canada has left
her people in the hands of their lackadazical civil service, but the new prime minister is now showing interest.
