simple carbs - do they count toward your overall carbs?

here's a question:

if you're trying to stick to a certain daily ratio as best you can, and you're falling short on carbs, can you add a bit of fruit with a few meals to make up the carbs? or must complex carbs be used?

Smile Short answer, yes . . .

Eat ur fruits! They r delicious & r packed w/ fiber & micronutrients.

The simple carbs u should watch r man-made refined sugars , not the natural sugars u get in fruits.

USDA guidelines recommend refined sugars should be no more than 8% of total calories.

Candy is a "Free Food" as long as there are no nuts in it (j/k)

Or drink some milk, sprinkle healthy cereal onto things, have a tomato, etc...

Yes it does matter... not all fiber has calories (i.e. from being fermented by gut bacteria) ...

http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocente...ber/index.html
"Some fibers are readily fermented by bacteria that normally colonize the colon. In addition to increasing the amount of bacteria in the colon, fermentation results in the formation of short-chain fatty acids (acetate, propionate and butyrate) and gases (1). Short-chain fatty acids can be absorbed and metabolized to produce energy. Interestingly, the preferred energy source for colonocytes (epithelial cells that line the colon) is butyrate. Pectins, beta-glucans, guar gum, inulin and oligofructose are readily fermented, while cellulose and lignin are resistant to fermentation in the colon (6, 7). Foods that are rich in fermentable fibers include oats and barley and fruits and vegetables. Cereal fibers that are rich in cellulose, such as wheat bran, are relatively resistant to bacterial fermentation (1). "

This may have important consequences for metabolism; half the calories in fiber are made available to the body."

Rounding up to the nearest whole number? How about 2-3 calories/gram?
