My Dead Lift is alot stronger than my squat. But I read that Mark Henry can dead lift over 900 lbs, and squat over 1000 lbs. It got me thinking, is it normal to squat more than you dead lift?
And my Dead Lift is ungodly higher than my ATG squat. They are not even comparable.
Just curious.

Squat weight v. Dead lift weight

I've actually read that body composition plays into how much someone can squat and deadlift. People with longer legs, shorter trunk are better suited for deadlifting, while people with shorter legs, and a longer trunk are better suited for squating. Although, I know could of gotten this mixed up, so if someone else has heard anything like this...

I'm in the same boat as you. I can only ATG squat 215 x 4 and parallel squat 245 x 4, but I deadlift 335 x 5. I'm just going to keep training my legs hard until they get strong.

I lift at a gym designed for powerlifters and alot of the guys compete. Their highest numbers from certified meets are on a board (mine will be there in the fall). Personally, My dead is about 80 lbs. higher than my squat, but I noticed that most of the guys on the board have higher squats than deads. There were maybe 3 out of 20 that had a higher dead than squat.
So, I was wondering the same thing. But, hey, I'm right with you. My dead is higher.

The gear is usually more effective in the squat. On the elite levels squat will always be higher. For people who do not take it as seriously, the deadlift generally has more potential. It is just more natural.

Part of the problem is when people get into weights like that, they have an extreme amount of mass and it is not all muslce. As in the case of Mark Hnery (who can slam dunk from standing btw). When you are around 3-400lbs your stomach gets in the way and you can't get the same leverage anymore.
I am not trying to be better than you, just better than myself

I believe the limited factor on deadlift is grip - Human skin isn't designed to withstand the pressure buildup that would occur from holding 1000 lbs, I don't care how strong your skin is or if you have a grip of iron, 1000 lbs would rip your fingers off.
Hell, when I deadlift 250-300 my skin hurts like mad, can't imagine pulling 3.5-4x that.

not necesarily^, i mean, not everyone weighs 200lbs
but you are rite on that, you do deff. add your bodyweight to the amount you are lifting......
now, i deadlift 225 rite now, but i dont tell people that i dead 385(my dead plus my bodyweight) but i do factor my weight for my personal stats.."Wow Strong Arms"

u didn't understand my statement...
although u may squat only 400lbs, you are ACTUALLY squating 400lbs + (your bodyweight above ur thigh)...
u say u squat 400..but ur body is actually being loaded more than 400...
However, for the moves like deads and bench, ur bodyweight doesn't resist the motion...
ps: deadlift involes insignificant body resistance upon flexing at knee joint...
just try urself
trying doing squats and deadlifts without any weight..
you will see squat has great body resistane!Last edited by yusof; 02-09-2005 at 08:48 PM.
