Drugs may have had a part in it, but you cant blame it all on drugs, not all health problems that happen to pros are because of that. For years Mike was eating 5 pounds of red meat a day, he had high coloestrol, theres alot of other reasons that may contribute.

Nobody said steroids was the only reason just one of the main reason in this case. According to an interview with Mike, he was genetically predispositioned to high cholesterol. He was taking lipitor and other chol-lowering medications before his bypass surgery.
Most pro BB's know that steroids basically can drop your good cholesterol to zero causing a very dangerous situation. Eating tons of red meat while juicing with bad cholesterol genes is a recipe for disaster. Mike probably knew this but with an indestructible mentality towards lifting, eating, etc, it was too late. Mike acknowledged this in his interview.
Just goes to show if you are going to juice, know what the crap you are doing. Ain't nobody invincible.

I used to eat red meat 3 times a day a couple of years ago, now im mostly eating chicken, red meat once a day, maybe twice on a workout day but, 90% of the time now its chicken. Bodybuilding is supposed to be about health, Id hate to admit it, but it is turning into an unhealthy obsession. I like watching freaks like Marcus, Ronnie, or Paco. But how healthy are these guys? When Ronnie was on Jay Leno, it was a sad day for bodybuilding, there was the reprentative of the sport, #1 in the world, and sitting down he out of breath, gasping for air.

dont forget high BP will cause arteriosclerosis, stenosis narrowing and thickening of the arteries.
atherosclerosis is from ldl, LPa.
lean red meat has only a few grams more fat than chicken so dont get to worked up

BTW, pick up this month's copy of FLEX to read a great article on Mike: Mike Matarazzo looks ahead
Great stuff, totally DEBUNKS the myth that steroids are only secondary in pro bodybuilding. His dad did not have a disposition to heart problems, Mike narrows it down exclusively to his unhealthy bodybuilding lifestyle. "I knew I was killing myself every time I was preparing for a show in my hotel room, taking all those chemicals." "If I could, I'd turn back time and just go back to being a truck driver - it wasn't worth it if it costs me my health."

Did his family have a history of heart problems or not? Some people say he didn't and then Branch Warren in MD said he did.
The drugs didn't help and neither did 5-7lbs of red meat per day for many years.

How the hell would Branch know about Mike Matarazzo's family history?
Mike has stated no one in his family has had health problems related to the heart, and neither did he until he started eating buckets of KFC and round steak by the crate in the mid-90s, not to mention shooting sust and deca like every other week.
I saw a video of him at the Arnold Classic in Feb 2004, where he was talking about how healthy he is and how he's coming back to bodybuilding in a big way. 9 months later he was on a hospital bed with 15 IVs in his chest. Think about it.

Hopefully Mike is getting better now. I ran into him in Sacramento, think he runs a gym there, a few years back at fry's electronics. He's very down to earth , I acted a little like a starstruck little twat. But he was cool, told me he was still competing and when I left he said "good to see you" Nice guy.

You have to remember that the article was printed in FLEX.
You never know what they will do to be seen as a friend to the youth of america in the light of the new crack down on the worst drug in the world and the biggest problem america is facing right now .......steriods LMFAO.
If you had massive medical bills and someone turned to you and said " if you say this we will pay your medical bills" im pretty sure you would agree to saying anything, FLEX has always been seen to be 'anti-doping', printing such an article would undoubtably shed a good light on them. Helping them be seen as a governing body being against juice and 'protecting' the youth of america
I dont know what to believe myself.
I dont believe for a second that they are the cause for needing triple by-pass surgery, it will more than likely be a mixture of :- the large consumption of red meat for years and years (raising cholesterol levels), the juice (lowering HDL levels), the heavy training he did (which has been proven to cause hardening of the arteries) and the chance their is a genetic trate making him more suseptable to such problems........all these together spell a bad time ahead.
I dont really care what caused it myself, i just hope he gets better.
