Im a finance major should i minor in economics or no minor at all?

Iam a transfer student going to a uni. This will be my junior year. I liked the 2 economics classes i was required to take. Im thinking of minoring in economics, since i have to take elective classes anyways. Is it worth the time/effort? do employers see it as a benefit at all. Guys whats your take?

not a bad idea, if you go into investment banking or any type of corporate finance accounting is what you will need 90% of the time.

In my opinion an accounting degree is more respected and way more vesrsatile then a finance degree. Unless you plan on going to grad school for finance I would serisously consider accounting especially if you think you are good at it. You can easily find jobs in finance with an accounting major but not so much the other way around.

employers will look at what you did and go from there. It is not going to blow anyone away by having a minor in economics. I doubled majored in finance in Bus. MGT. did not really do much.

If you really want to own anyway in that field get an MBA(from at least top 50 schools, and you will be making close to or over 100k a year starting).

But if this is your only option I see no reason you could not do it. Just means you are exposed to more than one field.

Well sorry for wasting your time guys. I appreciate the feedback. I called the school, the only minors i can do is real estate, and entrepreneurship. So that pretty much rules everything out that we've been discussing here. Now im just really trying to decide if i want to major in finance or accounting

FINANCE!!! accounting sucks so bad. It is boring work. Finance is so much universal and has just about unlimited possibilities. If you hate accounting you are stuck with that for the rest of your LIFE!!

It was mostly a joke. Accounting is not exciting. But if you are good at it, it can provide a solid career that is rewarding. If you become good at any job you will learn to like it.

Im Finance with a minor in accounting. I hate accounting. Im good at it and I understand it - but do I want to spend the rest of my life doing reconciliations and journal entries into ancient unix systems AKA fidelity, ADP, WITS, blah blah blah? **** no!

The reason im minoring in accounting is to show my employers that I have some level of proficiency in the language of business.

**** son - im at my job right now which is an accounting, more specifically Financial Management Division. I'm working for the Accounting center for a MAJOR Wall Street investment bank's mortgage subsidiary. You might have heard about us in the news recently. Bear Stearns. The reason we are a subsidiary of BS is because everyone here is accounting with the exception of a few finance majors.

The real finance majors are at the actual investment bank doing interesting stuff such as mergers and acquistions, trading, brokering, private equity.

Hell Harvard University's undergrad Business program doesnt even offer accounting because its such a mechanical job that can either be automated with SQL scripts and programs or better yet outsourced to India. DOnt believe me? Go to an accounting center and see how many Indias you see. I guarantee you will be amazed. Plus they are all majored in Accouting + IT so basically they are IT and basically they are going to be automating the accounting processes of banks. Why do you think there is such a demand for IT? Because lots of the mechanical boring jobs of accountants wont be around in the next 10 years.

I listen to accounting **** all day from ppl that sit around me (remember im an intern) "This one here the reason its all out there is because they didnt put pennys on some of the tickets on the journal entries so it doesnt match up and go away so I have to find everone of them and put the pennies in to clear the breaks. I have hundreds of these, if not more" (I just listened to the guy who sits next to me say that verbatem)

My plan: Get my finance BBA - get my CFA - its like a CPA except for finance majors and a hell of a lot harder and more gruelling to study for. 3 tests that pretty much require 250+ hours of studying per test. Usually takes a few years to complete.

If you like a subject odds are you will be taking those classes as electives and have enough credits to make it a minor in no time. One of my friends realised in his last year that he had completed a minor in econ without intending on it.

my minor in accounting only required 2 additional accounting classes since finance and accounting overlap so much.
I have to take Fed Taxation and Cost accounting to get my accounting minor. And its not even an extra 6 hours - I would have to take these 6 hours anyway to graduate. Granted I could be taking blow off art classes for these last 6 hours but why not invest in 2 harder classes for a free minor

If you like econ and do well in it, why the hell not? If you suck at it, why bring down your gpa just to be able to call it your minor?

If you enjoyed accounting, by all means go accounting. One thing's for sure, the number of people in your classes will be much smaller and will thin out even more in the 4000 level courses because everyone will be bailing out to major in finance and econ, lol.

econ is more theoritcal than accounting.

my school does not let use major and minor in business, only one of them so check with your school policies first. i might just do a double major.

CFAs are the fast track. Forget what you major in if you get a CFA charter your going to be balling.

I will say economics will come in handy for CFA charter because the 3rd test I hear is basically all macro and micro financial economic theory.

People spend years getting a CFA charter. If you do it - your going to be on the fast track. Its no joke.

Yet! I would never get a major in straight economics because if it takes you 5 years to complete the CFA during that 5 years your going to have a ****ty job. Hell I dont even know what type of businesses hire econ majors. Thats like philosophy except economic theory. If you go straight econ no business minor (at my school econ isnt even in the business school) then your going to have to get a masters or PHD in econ to get a good job.

If you cant get a minor in a business field at your college I sure as hell wouldnt go straight ECON. My friend has Econ with minor in finance and he might be ok since it shows he at least knows some accounting/fianance/business rather than straight economic philosophy.

    I'm an Econ major.

Once you get past the basic principles classes, your econ classes (intermediate level and above) are gonna start getting math-intensive. Using mostly single- and multi-variable derivatives, exponential and logarithmic functions, and lots and lots of algebra. Once you get used to it, it's not too difficult (this coming from a guy who got a C in Calc 1 lol)

You can get a good job in the business world with an Econ major (depending on the caliber of your school, and your personal gpa and experience). Some consulting firms (like Bain, for example) will recruit from various majors. Even some investment banks too; to quote from Goldman Sachs' Career FAQ: "Your area of concentration is less important to us than your potential...We recruit from a broad range of universities and degree disciplines each year."

That said, I personally believe you'd probably be safer if you majored in business/finance or engineering or something along those lines. An Econ major is very related to business; it's not like you're a philosophy major or a spanish major! (but even then, a firm would probably prefer a philosophy major with a 3.9 gpa and stellar extra-curriculars and experience over a finance major with a 2.9 gpa and mediocre extra-curriculars and experience).

A CFA is definitely something I'll look into; haven't heard much about it.

If you like it go ahead and minor in it. It certainly wouldn't hurt. Plus, it goes well with your major.
