I have chicken that says "eat or freeze by 8/4/07" in my fridge. Is it safe to eat it today?

I'll eat it if you don't want to.
The Iron never lies to you. You can walk outside and hear all kinds of talk, get told that you're a god or a total bastard. The Iron will always kick you the real deal. The Iron is the great reference point, the all-knowing perspective giver. Always there like a beacon in the pitch black. I have found the Iron to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends may come and go. But two hundred pounds is always two hundred pounds. ~Henry Rollins

Why risk it? It's not like milk, you can't smell it and expect to know if it's safe to consume accurately. This is meat we are talking about, sorry but I personally wouldn't eat it. What's better, 10 dollars wasted or the medical bills, the hospital stay, the weight loss and the massive amounts of diarrhea?

Last week I had the best hamburger I've ever had - 3 days past expiration. I smelled that bad boy and I swear it was from the cow yesterday.
I think different places place expiration dates differently - If it's a higher scale place and they want their meat to taste EXTRA fresh, they post it sooner. If your out in the country and the place wants to save a dime for shipping and storage, post it as long as the FDA allows.Food is fuel.

sell by dates are used by grocery stores to cover their ass basically if u refrigerated/ freezed after buying then it should be fine. check to see if there's a smell. if its bad you'll know. but as stated before i usually don't leave meat in the fridge for longer then 4-5 days after the date of purchase and thats pushing it u need to consider the times u open ure fridge to get stuff out etc.
