Machines are used to target certain muscle groups and certain areas within that muscle group, but in the end your targeting nothing if you don't have any muscle. Free-weights would be a good way to build the muscle up and afterwards you can mix some machine work in or something, although I don't recommend too much of it.

Machines are good for a pre-workout warm up. And also holding my belt, water bottle, etc.

According to a friend i have who was a serious body builder, free weights over machines is a myth. I don't really buy it but he uses mostly machines and he is huge.

Nothing wrong with using machines, but you should be basing your workout around free weights. For every 3 freeweight exercise you do, you do 1 machine exercise.

Free weights. Period. No you can't use pussy-machines to get the same effect.
(Ok, so it's possible in certain cases, but in general, stick to frees)

You are an idiot. Machines aren't 'pussy'. They have their place just like anything else. Machines DO have advantages, believe it or not, and a lot of people make use of these advantages. i.e: pro bb'ers.
If they were so 'pussy' and useless then they wouldn't exist.

It was kind of a joke. Damn, everyone takes everything so seriously here.
I even tried to clear that up with my parenthetical statement...

Use machines when you can't do that action with free weights (eg cable row)

Yea free weights in general, but I like machines as a final isolation exercise, they tend to hit the targetted muscle better without triggering the other groups associated with a specific muscle (stab's ect)

Never voluntary take a tool out of the toolbox. Machines have their uses. But as a beginner or someone who has a lot more size to gain, Free Weights should be the focus of your time in the gym, you should spend most of your time with a barbell in your hands, but there is no reason to not use the machines as well.
You can incorporate hamstring curls into a leg workout after youve done a lot of free weight work, to cap it off. You could hit the pec deck for high reps after you've finished a chest workout. Just don't make the machines your priority.
(By machine I assume you do not mean things like leg presses, hip sleds, cable cross overs, seated rows, etc.)

Bulking 'til 230lbs or when the Buffalo Bills have a winning season. Whichever comes first.
Step 1) Pick up a weight and a small farm animal.
Step 2) Lift one and eat the other.

Free weights are a more natural movement, I think it helps with stability. Some machines are needed though.
