Question Water !

We all know how important it is for a bodybuilder to drink water, especially now that the weather is getting hotter.
Water can also be a great help when we are trying to cut up.
Now I've got 2 questions about that:

1) Can you drink too much water? and how much is too much?

2) When you drink a lot, you also eliminate a lot of water among others when you sweat, also losing important minerals in the process. So when you drink a lot, would you advise upping the amount of minerals supps you take?

You can drink to much, but you will never do it. Around 11 leters you get "water intoxication" which is a condition where you throw off something in your body (electrolites or something?) cause you have taken in to much water. As for the mineral comment I am really not sure, but like I said, you would have to drink A LOT of water to do anything harmful.

An average of 6-8 liters of water per day is very normal for a bb'er. If you lose a lot of water very fast, you should make one of those liters a sports drink of some kind to replace electrolites.
If you drink too much (something ridiculous like 7 liters in one hour) your salt balance gets out of whack and you can literally drown yourself from within. Or your bladder will explode while running to the bathroom, killing the 6 people in your way. Either way, it is very difficult to drink TOO much.

I did read of the case of a girl in the UK who died as a result of drinking to much water. BUT...... this came as a result of taking the drug ectasy at a rave party. Under normal cirumstances I cannot imagine you would drink too much, as your body will react and you will be having to force yourself to drink more.

If you are concerned you are not drinking enough water, look at the colour of your pee. Obviously darker means more dehydrated, almost clear well hydrated.

Whilst on the question of water, whats the view on mineral water?

I have heard that certain mineral water have too much mineral content and can lead to jvarious forms of stones i.e. kidney stones etc.

Fact or fiction?

Exclamation WARNING!!! This is an ancient thread

I really hate making new threads, but the previous post is pretty interesting. I personally was wondering if anyone else drinks mineral water, and if you do- carbonated or not? I personally drink the carbonated variety, and drink 1.5L per work day (it's relatively expensive, so I only drink it at work.)

I drink seltzer water on occasion when affordable, which is carbonated without minerals, and try to avoid too much mineral anything unless in colloidal form, and feel I need them. I prefer pure drinking water for flushing out the kidneys of all the other junk I take.

Due to having Saltwater fishtanks in the house, I have a Reverse Osmosis water filter. It turns out the purest water available, and its just shy of Distilled Water.

The main intent of drinking lots of water, is to flush the nutrients into your Muscles. The more nutrients going into your muscles, the better material they have to build with. With Tap water, you have a load of extra stuff in it and your body has to take extra time to filter them out. With purer water, your body spends less time filtering and your muscles get the water faster. Again, working towards the key of getting Nutrients into your muscles.

I avoid as much tap water/seltzer/drinks as much as possible. I'm an older guy, and any advantage over the younger crowd I can get, I'll take.

IMO, you can drink too much water. Most people call it "drowning".

A: hyponatremia is the term and it happens to mostly endurance athletes
Hyponatremia (British: hyponatraemia) is an electrolyte disturbance (disturbance of the salts in the blood) in which the sodium (Natrium in Latin) concentration in the plasma is lower than normal (hypo in Greek; in this case, below 135 mmol/L).
Severe or rapidly progressing hyponatremia can result in swelling of the brain (cerebral edema), and the symptoms of hyponatremia are mainly neurological. Hyponatremia is most often a complication of other medical illnesses in which either fluids rich in sodium are lost (for example because of diarrhea or vomiting), or excess water accumulates in the body at a higher rate than it can be excreted (for example in polydipsia or syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone, SIADH). There may also be spurious hyponatremia (pseudohyponatremia or factitious hyponatremia) if other substances expand the serum and dilute the sodium (for example, high blood levels of fats in hypertriglyceridemia or high blood sugar in hyperglycemia).
2. no unless you are a tri athelete you should be golden.

This reminds me of the "drink 8 glasses of water a day" meme.
That might be good advice for bodybuilders, but I've heard that for the average guy, this advice is based on a mistaken interpretation of an old report.
I tend to agree. I highly doubt that humans evolved with access to that much water daily. Therefore I highly doubt the average body needs or expects anywhere near that amount.
Bodybuilding, of course, is different- you need more everything.
