How do you all do it
I have been training in both Hapkido and BJJ for about 2 months, and although I'm coming along nicely in MA, my gym is struggling.
I have the attitude that when I walk in the gym, I am there to rip my body to shreds (within reason, calm down) - I have something to prove to myself. Pushing out that last rep with twice your bodyweight strapped across your shoulders - heaven.
But I am finding that I am over training way too much so my question is - how do you all do it. I have already cut my gym back from 4 days a week to 2.
I train MA on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays for 2 hours each - as you can see this gives me very little room for training.
I give myself a rest on Sunday and Wednesday, leaving me do an upper/lower body split routine on Tuesday and Thursday. Yesterday (Thursday) I ripped the **** out of my legs with heavy squats and the last thing I want to do is go to MA for 2 hours and ruin the work I put in, but on the other hand I want to go...
How the hell do you all do it.

Full body workouts will hit your muscles more per week than a split will....

I do more circuits in the gym than anything. So im not going all out heavy weights that will make me sore or no strength. I really gave up my "getting big" philosophy and now my emphasis is on being strong but being able to last. So maybe dont lift as heavy and do more circuits as they will also be some of the hardest workouts you will ever do but u wont be as sore/ and or gas out easier.

Why do you think it will ruin the work you put in?

you really cant/should not lift to be big as a fighter. Takes up to much energy and takes to long to recover from hard workouts, and muscle is not all that important for fighting. If you lift at all you should lift for endurance

You don't lift like a BB when you're doing MA. You pretty much can't if you're training seriously.

OK this is my perspective so take it for what it is worth. You want to keep in mind that some of the guys that you model yourself after (pro MMA fighters) are collegiate level or above athletes to begin with. The problem with a lot of the guys i see coming into the gym these days is that they are tyring to do two things. 1) gain experience/pick up belts in BJJ and 2) add to their frame so that they can fight in a higher weight class.
The fact is that unless you're a collegiate athlete (wrestler or football player) your body really hasnt matured to the point where you can go into a gym and hit up high amounts of cardio like rolling , maintain your lifting routine and expect to put on weight in your body and lifts. It just DOESN'T happen like that. A LOT of us guys that wrestle in college go to BJJ and PUT ON weight after we get out, but do you know why? Its because the amount of cardio we do in college FAR excedes any amount of cardio you do in most BJJ academies.
IF you are trying to do both your gains are going to be slower than one who is either trying to BULK or learn BJJ its just the way it is from personal experience.
(*of course there are exceptions like guys that start naturally light with their body)
