I've heard taking a broomstick and putting it on your back like a squat then bending to the side until the broomstick is perpendicular to the floor is the best to get rid of love handles. Things like dumbbell side bends build your obliques as opposed to toning them and ridding of fat. I think I read an article on t-nation about everything I just said. lol
