Question Should I Try a Weightgainer?

Howdy, just a question about whether or not it would be worth my resources to atleast try a weightgainer.


I'm a 19 yr old college student, currently 5'10" and at 172lbs. I am not really a large person, and by genetics it seems as my father is smaller than I.

I've been lifting since August, and started at around 155lbs. It has seemed however that I can't get any further ahead than 172lbs. I've tried eating more, I just don't think I'm eating as much as I need to, and as it is I'm eating when I'm not hungry half the time.

I've recently purchased Whey protein, which arrived on campus today, however I won't be able to pick it up until monday. Ironically, it'll take longer for the box to get from the building accross the parking lot to my room, than it took to get to PA from bb.com shipping in FL :-s

Monday I start lifting again, I decided I would like to try HST for myself, and have been off since the wednesday before last for my Strategic Deconditioning period. I'll have whey, which I think will help restart my gains a bit, as well as using a new system and having Deconditioned a bit, however, looking back I realize that I think the biggest hinderance in my gains have been my diet. I eat a college cafeteria with bad foods, and I don't always make every meal in time. I try to take food with me often, but cannot always, and I'm rarely hungry. I think the problem with my gains is my diet.

With these things in mind, also is the fact that I'm on a Very limited budget at school. I am paying for my entire education with only the help of loans. I pay for my books and everything else I need or want. I get no support from my family. Being on very limited funds, I wonder if I should try a cheaper weight gainer and see if it sparks larger gains. The one I had in mind was http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/un/mj.html because it's the cheapest one, seems to have a decent amount of protein(even though I'll have whey to supplement with if need be) and I can certainly believe that an extra 1k calories a day will do something for me. It would be a 19 day supply for about $30 after shipping.


Should I purchase this short term supplement and see what happens? Should I just try to eat more? Should I just give the Whey supplement a bit of time and see if that alone doesn't help me get where I want to go? What are you opinions on weight gainers, and regarding my situation what do you think you would do if in my shoes? If I were to get a 19 day supply of this weightgainer, about how much would this help me on my way? Would I want to take as directed: 1k calories a day, or maybe just have half a serving for twice as many days, and supplement with whey? I'm hoping for some decent responses please, this is important to me.

if your really hard up for money it would probably be cheaper to make your own shakes...just put peanut butter, milk, oats, canola oil, and maybe some icecream in a blender and you can easily have over 1000 calories in a shake...

U say u bought some whey ? well heres a weight gainer u can make with the whey u already have without buying the weight gainers

Mix 2 scoops
1/2 cup icecream (or 1/3)
1/3 cup oats
creatine (unflavored powder or cee bulk powder)
10-12oz 2% milk

I would also recommend eating as muchas possible. even when your not hungry EAT !!! im on a bulking diet and im gaining 1-2 lbs a week but im also lifting 6 days a week. i would recommend never to do cardio (except basketball to loosen up). i would do all bulking exercises w/ low reps so u dont boost your metabolism or boost heart rate up with doing lots of reps. i think that covers most of it......................my life is an open book............

gaining 17 pounds since augest isnt' that bad. before you start spending your precious money try the protien that you have. i've gained 10 pounds from whey. also what is your goal weight? you say your not really hungry so u think ur eating enough. the truth is you should eat whenever your not even hungry and i know that at least half of these people on the board are eating when they aren't hungry. if your bulking stack up on things with high carbs and high calories in your lunch but also take in at least 172 grams of protien. that wieght gainer isn't all that good because it full of slow digesting protien which is good for night but the good think is you have that whey that can be taking right after your workout. that weightgainer also has only 19 servings which is typical but if your really trying to bulk and add on the pounds its gonna take a lil more than 19 days if your really pushing yourself at the gym. re-evaluate what you already have and try to work with it before you spend money you could be using for later. thats just my $.02
