the normal spin-lock plastic-coated dumbells (not hex) are now cheaper than the steel, i just got a pair from ebay. the only problem is they arent really a 'coating'. i would consider a coating to be like a skin over a normal fully formed steel dumbell.
however this crap is just a straight metal bar inside with the outside (knurled grip & thread) entirely moulded out of plastic. thats how they make it cheaper, because platsic mouldings in large volumes are cheaper to make than cutting a thread & knurling on a lathe.
this is ok for most exercises, but i was planning on using them for overhead tricep extensions holding one dumbell in both hands. if the plastic thread was to fail when going heavy, the dumbell would fall into my head like a spear.
