I try to eat every 2-3 hours to keep my metabolism up and going... but I try not to eat for about 5 hours before sleeping because my cousin said it was bad for you, and i trust her because she's a doctor... but she's not a nutritionist so i'm sure you guys probably know better than her, if you go longer than 3 hours without eating your body starts to eat your muscle for sustenance and i CAN'T afford to lose any more muscle.. so how long do you guys think i should not eat before sleeping?? these days i eat my last meal at about 9.. and go to sleep at about 2 or 3... I'm sure im LOSING muscle like this and i don't want that.. but i'm afraid if i eat closer to when i sleep, i may add fat... HELP ME

Not eat for 5 hours before sleeping?! Thats crazy, I have never done that before and I'm in great shape. I usually eat dinner around 8PM to 9PM (big dinner) and I usually go to sleep around 12AM to 1AM.
But, thats just dinner, inbetween there I usaully make a peanutbutter and banana sandwhich with a bottled water. And 1 hour before I sleep I drink a Protein shake (whey) and eat an orange. And I am seeing pretty good gains.
But everybodies different, if I dont eat 5 hours before sleeping I would probably pass out from hunger or not be able to sleep.

I agree. I take a casein protein shake just before I go to bed. If you don't eat for 5 hrs before you go to bed, then say sleep 7 hrs, thats 12 hrs/half the day right there that you are not feeding your muscles. You would be lucky to see any significant gains that way. Some people get up in the middle of the night to have another shake. I wouldn't recommend that unless you are a pro, but I would definitely say you need to eat just before you go to sleep. Some low fat cottage cheese, natural peanut butter or some form of slow digesting protein is great.

Going to add something serious to this thread, that's not based on "brosicence"..
The only thing you should worry about when eating before bed. Is if you're taking in a significant amount of carbs, you should wait an hour before hitting the sack. The reasoning behind this is. When we sleep, it takes about 90min (1:30h) for our bodies to reach deep sleep (REM or IV). During this time, our bodies release a hormone called Human Growth Hormone (hGH) which is a very important hormone for... growth.
This is where carbohydrates (CHO) comes into play. Right before hGH is released, the body release a hormone to check the blood stream for any glucose (simple form of carbohydrates). If this hormone detects that there is glucose in the blood stream, it will blunt the release of hGH. This is a bad thing.
So, just make sure if you're ingesting any carbs before bed. That you give a good hour before hitting the sake, so you get about 150min (2:30h) for the carbs to work there way out of your system.
Hope this helped! The only time you'll ever see 'success' before 'work' is in the dictionary
OGZERS, it's been 3 hours and 6 minutes since my last meal, teh biceptz are going catabawlick!!!!
Bodybuilding is simple, not easy..
