I read that diet sodas are not better than normal sodas!
They did a study with 4000 people and found out that diet sodas increase the risk of heart attacks, diabetes and obesity! How is this possible? It said that you should not drink more than 1 diet soda a day. Has anyone of you ever heard something like this? Unfortunately I don't know the name of the study and where it can be found.

It causes obesity because cokes that have very low or 0 calories trick your body. Your putting a substance in it that provides the body no energy. So it kinda sends your body into a frenzy and it doesnt satisfy your hunger. Hunger is almost completely mental, so your body kinda loses its ability to guage how much energy it has based on what you put in it.
This is only when large amounts of diet soda are consumed though.

I have also heard that. I can't remember the facts, but I did hear it from a DR.....so that that for what it's worth. I'll see if I can ask her to explain it to me again.

Association is not causation. I saw the "study" and it's an embaressment. It's the same as saying medicine causes sickness, since only people who take medicine are sick.
Diet sodas are perfectly healthy.

One question I have is what type of people were doing the study and what is their lifestyle like? ie. healthy/exercise or the usual double meat with cheese, fat ass size the fries and a diet coke.

Good question. Maybe they thought that drinking diet coke means that they can eat whatever they want.

Its a terrible study, it simply correlated that people who drink soda of any type are probably more likely to eat like **** (not all do, dont jump on me!!!! ).
The typical person who orders a whopper with cheese and fries and get a diet coke is who caused this study to draw a poor association (I cant even call it a conclusion)
Anyone know who paid for this study??

"Dr. Ramachandran S. Vasan of Boston University School of Medicine, the lead author of the study, said it is unlikely that an ingredient in soda causes the effect. All along, I've been waiting to see more on this topic. I've been told by far too many people that diet soda is great because there's no calories and no sugar. It's not water. There's something in there, whether it's the sweetner that's used or some other ingredient that has to have some nutritional value that isn't reported. I wish there was more info, or more conclusive information at least.

It has nothing to do with whats in the soda, its basically what the average joe consumes WITH the soda, as stated by the guy who wrote the study.
Drink up! dont worry about it as long as you dont have fries with it...or Pizza...Pizza and soda is so good!!!!

Good find.
I should have re-read what I wrote before submitting it. I wasn't really relating it to the topic correlating soda-drinking to weight problems. I just take issue with the whole "diet" soda issue in the first place. That's all.
I do agree with that point in the study, though it seems to be kind of common sense. A soda here and there isn't going to add the lbs, it's what is consumed with it.

Another totally lame study...I'm sick of this kind of junk. The study should just say when fat, lazy people drink diet soda, they tend to shove a lot of crap in their pie holes along with it. That required a study?!? Hang out at a fast food joint for lunch any day of the week and you'd find that out. Duh.

I think this is another case of the media blowing things way out of proportion, they do their best to try and intill fear in the minds of the general public. Everyday a new study shows that something else is bad for you. Statistically speaking, you can manipulate the data of a study to say whatever you want it to say. Remember years ago when margarin came out, they said it was much better for you than butter? Now look at it. Science shows that trans fat is terrible for you because your body can't break it down...its like eating plastic. So the moral of the story is dont believe everything you read, and most things in moderation won't kill you.

Drink diet sodas sweetened with splenda/surcalose, apparently it cant be processed by the body, so shouldn't be able to have ill effects, plus no calories

Whether good or bad, soda of any sort is unnecessary. Why don't you sit down and describe your soda out loud to yourself next time you've got one handy.
You will come up with something along the lines of "brownish, runny, bubbling, acidic substance".
Yummm
Just a thought. Water costs less, is readily available, and is necessary to live.

If I'm going out to eat I'm drinking a darn pop.
Sometimes I even drink non-diet pop. Yeah, I live life on the edge.
