Shaq's Biggest Challenge...
Does anyone else watch this show?? I cry everytime I watch it...I'm not a big cryer either LOL...It's just a really great show, and the kids are awesome, and I would love to implement an after school program like that in my town...I know that I would've been there in a heartbeat if I had something, and someone who cared like that when i was little. It's just nice to see that someone is actually doing something proactive about Childhood obesity, because kids can't do it alone. Shaq, out of all people has really inspired me to do something for the kids who need help and someone to relate too, teach them, and just be there for them.

This is an interesting situation. I heard about the show (commercials) and thought about how stupid it will probably be with Shaq in it. I watched the first episode and saw a certain side of Shaq and how serious the man is and now I have a new respect for the man.
The way he and his team even try to get the school system to improve the food and Gym programs is amazing. I'd like to sea this show win some awards.
The main thing I don't like about watching it, is seeing the fat parents. One episode, the boy was supposed to workout with Shaq's team, but his mom helped him skip to go to his baseball game. If you see how fat the mother is, it makes you want to injure somebody. The idea that these parents are so lazy that they allow their children to become as terrible as them, should constitute child abuse charges -30-

I thought the same thing, was never a big fan of Shaq, always thought he had a bad attitude on the Laker's, (that's a whole other thread LOL) But after watching the show, I absolutly love him, we need people like that in this world.
Exactly, he has a great team, love the trainer, that guy is awesome, and "Doc" awesome too, the cook, I mean he brought in a cook! Last night they got the meals right, shaq bought the kids stair climbers, and the kids are getting MORE kids involved. its so inspiring, I love kids and I have thought about helping in some sort of way, just never really felt passionate about much, but this is something that would really change so much about our country.
The parents piss me off too, but they have gotten a lot better, they just need to pick it up and drop the LB's as well!
Glade someone else is watching the show

I really like the show because it shows how technology has helped make today's generation super lazy. When I was 12, I couldn't stay home, always had to be outside playing sports. My parents had to put alot of effort into trying keeping me inside.
Now these kids literally way more than I ever have and ever will. The one girl is 50% body fat and almost 300 lbs and she's not even 15 years old. It makes me glad I grew up in the era I did, because I can't imagine spending my teenage years trying to lose 150 pounds.
I'm surprised that Shaq's team isn't encouraging the parents to get in the program too. There is some irony as well, the chef use to be on a show called "Food 911" and he was in shape then. Now he himself has gained some bad weight -30-

You know I think he has mentioned that some of the parents should be following the program as well, they could be making progress and we just don't know...that's just my optomistic side coming out. LOL

I love the show, and will admit that I cry everytime I watch it as well! It breaks my heart to know that some of those children are 11 or 12 and already weigh more than I do by 100 pounds. I know how it is to grwo up with the extra weight, and I only hops that this show helps shed a new light on the childhood obesity problems we are currently facing in America!

Yes, your optimistic side is quite 'silly'. I'm very optimistic that the parents will probably gain a few pounds when it's all over -30-

I thought you were supposed to be optimistic? You need to give the parents a chance.

They weren't there for the kids before Shaq and they won't be there after Shaq leaves. It's the "Shaq Effect".
And you're the one who started this "silly" craze in FemaleMISC -30-

People can change, it's hard but they can. If they don't do it for themselves I hope they at least keep their kids with healthy habits...It's not fair to the kids to suffer cause the parents don't have healthy habits and I hope that Shaq at least instills that into the kids.

The sad part about this show is that it's headed by a celebrity. That's the only reason the kids and parents are participating. Once the show ends, the parents won't supervise the kids at the gym and there will be no nutritionist around. So it will be back to the transfats and hours infront of the TV.
Now you must stop laughing at the word you made popular -30-

I thank once the show is over it is back to the way it was before.
Sad but most likely that is what will happen
Let's see if thy do a 6-12 months update or something.
Most of those kids would have gain their weight back and same for the parents

I have to disagree...
I think the parents are to blame for the childrens health b/c they feed them crap, never introduced them to sports, and had them in front of the tv wayyyyy to much. This in turn created their weight and antisocial problems.
However, I think once these kids get into better shape and feel what it is like to be able to play sports, feel good about yourself, and attract more friends they will have a change in habits even when Shaq is gone. They've never felt that feeling before, and it's one that you don't want to lose once you've obtained.
So....well see, but I think it may turn out more positive.

The thing is they are kids
they do not go foodshopping
the parents do
And they is a stupid belief outhere that Junk food is cheaper than healthy food
We will see
Diet is the most important factor in all this, than we have keeping them actif!

That's what I am trying to say, yeah it's headed by a celebrity, one the especially kids love, yes it is the parents fault for not introducing the kids into sports and healthier choices...I just could never imagine being told "Your kid is going to die" and continue doing what I was doing to promote my kids death. It's child abuse, if you have the knowledge that your kid is going to die if you don't do something to get him/her in a healthier lifestyle, it's abuse in a way, and granted the kids need to know how to make healthier choices outside the home as well, and I think that Shaq is doing a good job in that.

It's true the parents might go back to feeding them junk, but these kids have at least been introduced to physical activity. That's something that was alien to them before.
I think even if the parents don't change the kids might still continue to be active, and "yes" diet is most important, but if a kids active then the weight seems to subside (at least till they get older).
When we were kids we ate whatever, but we were always ouside playing football, bball, swimming, ect.. We never thought about eating clean and were always in good shape. We just played.
Hopefully these kids will continue the same path with physical activity (and get away from the vido games), and maybe the ignorant parents will step up and help with their nutrition.

I was surprised by how powerful the show is - and I love it, not so much for what it is doing for these kids (which is fantastic), but for how much it's educating America. So many people watching the show will learn at least a little bit about how serious obesity really is, and some of the ways to eat healthy and exercise to combat it.

Well I think its opening up so many more "celebrities" and just the public in general on how bad it really is. These kids are going to die before their parents, parents are going to be burying their own children, that's just hard to imagine, and frankly for me, goes against nature. Good Morning America had something on this morning, I just caught a glimpse of it as I was walking out, but you are starting to see more Urgency in the matter instead of just on the 11 o'clock news announcing kids are getting fatter. I hope that America in general starts to implement more active after school programs and emphasis on nutrtion in schools, and even in the homes. These day's both parents work and kids are left to fend for themselves most the time...and it's sad. Even if these 6 kids aren't all succesful, at least, at the very least, someone tried and made it aware and in the end it will have done more good then harm.

Think of it this way, back in the 80's childhood obesity was approx. 40% less than it is now (not an accurate %). There was less fast food joints around and kids had to travel alot more to meet friends.
Today there is fast food joints in malls and close to schools and on every block. The Internet and cell phones allow interaction with friends without actually having to travel. All that adds up to less mandatory activity and when young kids are exposed to such an easy life, they aren't going to grow out of it. Add to that the parents being just as unhealthy as the kids and you know the rest.
Once Shaq is gone, the kids will be happy with their new bodies but they will hate the work that they have to put in to keep it that way. If we already have celebrities and magazines showing a good looking image to look up to body-wise and children are still overweight, Shaq's show won't change anything. Like 'empresscat' basically said, it's nice to have this show put the problem infront of people's faces in primetime -30-

Didnt read every post, but read quite a few. havent seen the show, but it sounds like one of those how much weight can ya lose kinda things, just with a famous person leading the way. Sounds pretty sad that parents dont haev control over that stuff, after all. Until the kids turn 18, it is their responsibilty to take care of them, and it sounds like they are doing a crappy job. What I think about the kids losing the weight and how they'll manage after he's gone. It all depends on how much they want it, and they are jsut kids. How old are they?

I haven't seen the show but I'm glad he's doing it. It's so depressing to see overweight kids and know that it's probably 90% their parent's fault, particularly since I have been on the receiving end of it. It's funny to think back...when I was 6 or 7 I wanted to grow up to be like the guys I saw on the muscle mags but they discouraged me from doing anything about it.
Added: At least I'm getting back to my goals now, that's what matters.

Yeah, I hear that. My parents didnt discourage it at all. But my dad and football coach trained me like a powerlifter. You know the ol "lift every thing in sight, eat everything in sight". So it was like I was on a neverending bulk. Little did I know, I wasnt into bodybuilding then. My dad was tho. All ive ever been told is this "You'll never be thin, its just not in your genetics". And I started to accept that. I mean yeah I was strong as hell, made all american in all my lifts, tied the US high school squat record. But, I would rather look good and give up some strength, than be fat and strong.

smallfry06- I didn't train or try for it but that was how I turned out in my late teens too. I was strongest person I knew (we where messing around one time and it took more then 4 other guys to hold me down, lol) but hated how fat I was.
anb1683- Cool, maybe we'll run into one another sometime.
