    How much fat per day?

    Hey guys,

Can someone please tell me how much fat a person should be consuming each day? Is there a formula based on bodyweight that can work it out?

    Thanks
    Zotud

no its based on how much of it you want to eat

if your on a low fat diet it would be recommended by me to have 20-25% of your calories from it and 5% saturated

so you would take 25% and multiply it by the amound of calories your eating so

    if your taking in 2000

    25% * 2000=500
    than divide that by 9

    500 / 9 =55.5

so you would eat 55.5 grams of fat
now you need carbs and protein i would recomend 35%or 1gram per pound protein
to get that you do the same equation except divde it by four
fat is nine calories per gram
    protein and carbs are four

    2000 Cals
    55.5 grams of fat 25%
175grams protein 35% (adjust up if needed until 1gramper pound)
    that leaves us with carbs
200 carbs 40% (adjust down for every gram of protein adjusted up)

but it all depends on your diet of preference
this one is low fat medium carbs high protein

if you want a good book that really goes indepth about fats you can get one i have

    "know your fats" by Enig

its not fitness-oriented book, its just all about fats in nutrition.

anyway what i can tell you is that

1 - Some fats are essential, carbohydrates are not.
2 - Its the unsaturated fat that is essential, saturated fat is not
3 - partially hydrogenated (trans) fat although labelled as unsaturated is really NEITHER unsaturated or saturated, it should be labelled as TRANS - you can consider it to be saturateds SQUARED because its twice as bad, although under current terminology it actually goes on food labels as unsaturated. this fat is often in the baked goods mostly, in form of vegetable shortening, and also for all kinds of fried crap like french fries.

you need SOME unsaturated fat in your diet to get the essential fatty acids, it does not have to be much, but it has to be right kind of fat (oil actually mostly). but there are many cool things about fat. for example it can lower your cholesterol contrary to what some will have you believe; and fat can also have anabolic/anticatabolic effects. fat is also more filling (if you're trying to lose weight).

myself, i go for plenty of unsaturated fat in my diet, i don't count how much though, because none of these things are rock-solid science yet so what would be the point.

    unsaturated fat is mostly harmless
saturated is not really that bad unless you stuff yourself with it
but trans is just bad period, you don't want any of it

trans fat is not found in any natural foods, only man-made hydrogenated shortenings and such. thus our body has absolutely no use for it, its just poison, it has been linked to many diseases and there are plans to put information about it on food labels but food industry is huge and has the money to basically make its own laws so while this has or will happen soon in many countries, its not likely to occur in usa any time soon.
