I saw a documentary last night called "My Brilliant Brain" and it started off talking about 'savants', (like Hoffmans character in Rain Man), they used different parts of their minds and using brain scans they found out that they used the right side of their brain which is the creative side, meanwhile the left is logic and language.
They said people like savants actually have brain damage caused in the womb when testosterone floods the developing body the left sde of the brain can be damaged meaning the right side has to compensate by rewiring itself with the left side to create new connections.
But the most interesting part is that a scientist said that everyone can become savant like if they just disconnect the left, logical side of their brain.
He said the right hand side of the brain is dominated by the left but the left can be switched off using a new technique. Im not sure what happened exactly but the scientist got a test subject to do some tests like counting dots on a screen in 3 seconds and drawing an image of a horse. He then connected a device to the left side of his brain and used some process which disabled it temporarily. He then had to redo the tests and he performed much better. He could count the dots rainman style, and when he drew the horse again it was much more artistic.
The effects were temporary but the scientist said one day he'd like to invent a 'thinking cap' which you could wear when you want to use the right hand side of your brain and be creative.
- Left side of brain dominates right
- Right side of brain is creative in art, music, mathematics
- Savants use the right side of their brain and are 'gifted' when in reality they are nothing special, they just have 'privilledged access' to the right side of their brain
- Everyone can access the right side of their brain and become a creative genius by using a technique which switches off the left side but its only temporary

Turn off the left side of your brain and be a creative genius

The scientist doing the tests showed an image of a horse drawn by a 3 year old girl. The girl had speech problems but she could draw like Leonardo Da Vinci.
The thing is once her brain had developed properly over time and she could speak like a normal young girl she lost the ability to draw and her drawings became that of a child.
That is because the left side of her brain had started dominating the creative right side and limited her access to it.
The scientist said the left side of the brain is actually 'newer' than the right in evolutionary terms and that it limits access to the right as a means of understanding the world.
He said that in order for a person to make their way in this world they need to frame everything in their mind and so although your brain is ALWAYS taking in every single detail and storing it in the right side, the left only uses a small percentage of it in oder to allow you to operate.
The thing is, imagine if everyone used the right side of their brain. Everyone would be a creative genius. We would all be great artists and musicians. Savants can play instruments and use techniques that take the average person years to develop and learn but they come naturally to them.

Perhaps the most interestingly documented savant is of a man who remembers what the weather is like every day of his life, from the day of his birth and beyond. He can also tell you what any day of the year will fall on ad infinitum. I.E.
Reporter asked him what day of the week does April 4, 2077 fall on. The guy could tell you and it would check out. He could also tell you the third thursday of April in 2077 as well.TATERTOTSTATERTOTSTATERTOTSTATERTOTSTATERTOTStatertotstatertots

Like i said, the scientist had a device which the test subject wore for about 15 minutes and some kind of pulse temporarily switched off the left side of his brain. This made his right side dominant and so he could access parts of his brain that the left side would normally restrict. Therefore he could count dots like rainman and was more artistic.
Now we just need to wait for this device to be made for the mass market so everyone can switch off their left side.

If you look up TED talks Neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor How it feels to have a stroke
She explains the right side of the brain is like a parallel processor, it can think many thoughts at once. the Left side of the brain is a serial processor, it thinks one thought at a time.
Now the right side of the brain can be a delight in solving complex problems as it can consider many variables at once.
But if you decide to kick back and reflect on your problems using the right side of the brain, it will all come at once. It's like being buried under it all, it can lead to depression.
Now imagine you consider your problems using the left side of the brain, they will come one at a time in orderly fashion. This leads to a much healthier reflection and an easy way for the right side of your brain to solve said problems.
