I saw a documentary last night called "My Brilliant Brain" and it started off talking about 'savants', (like Hoffmans character in Rain Man), they used different parts of their minds and using brain scans they found out that they used the right side of their brain which is the creative side, meanwhile the left is logic and language.
They said people like savants actually have brain damage caused in the womb when testosterone floods the developing body the left sde of the brain can be damaged meaning the right side has to compensate by rewiring itself with the left side to create new connections.
But the most interesting part is that a scientist said that everyone can become savant like if they just disconnect the left, logical side of their brain.
He said the right hand side of the brain is dominated by the left but the left can be switched off using a new technique. Im not sure what happened exactly but the scientist got a test subject to do some tests like counting dots on a screen in 3 seconds and drawing an image of a horse. He then connected a device to the left side of his brain and used some process which disabled it temporarily. He then had to redo the tests and he performed much better. He could count the dots rainman style, and when he drew the horse again it was much more artistic.
The effects were temporary but the scientist said one day he'd like to invent a 'thinking cap' which you could wear when you want to use the right hand side of your brain and be creative.
- Left side of brain dominates right
- Right side of brain is creative in art, music, mathematics
- Savants use the right side of their brain and are 'gifted' when in reality they are nothing special, they just have 'privilledged access' to the right side of their brain
- Everyone can access the right side of their brain and become a creative genius by using a technique which switches off the left side but its only temporary
